Starts and remains steep and challenging for the first mile. Worth getting to the top for the views north along loch Erribol and east to Ben loyal.
On a good day you can see to the Faroe isles

To access the trail head involves driving up a very steep and very narrow road . Be aware if you decide to visit .

Moderately challenging trail with fantastic views.
First half is manageable for children. Was fine for my 8 year old daughter.
Suggested itinerary is head to Rydal from Ambleside. Take the higher trail up to see the very interesting Rydal Caves. Then turn back at the half way point, and head down towards the main trail along the river for a beautiful and more relaxing walk back towards Ambleside. Great views and well worth the hike.
Second half of trail may involve steeper ascent and less suitable for younger ones .

Access is via an almost invisible turn off right next to a Land rover dealership. Also did not appear to have public parking with the car park closed and labelled authorized parking.

Listed as kid friendly but first part involved walking along a narrow road with fairly busy traffic. Southern entry point is also almost invisible and difficult to access due to a big puddle of water right at the entry point after a rain shower. See photo. Gave up and went for the much better Ambleside trail.

Moderate level with wonderful views at the top!

awesome challenging walk note tough for dogs

Love this walk, have done it numerous times in Autumn/Winter and mainly in the rain. Can be slippy and there are a few muddy areas at the start. Spectacular views. Ice cream van part the way round sells hot/cold drinks.

gentle start for the first couple of miles on tarmac and forrestry roads before heading on to the hill itself. A little boggy to start but soon dries out. pretty steep the whole way with several heart breaking false summits to contend with. A couple of tricky rock formations escalate this in my view to a harder than average Munro. A bit blow at the top but the views make it all worthwhile.
ample parking at the bottom along with a wee cafe and a nice pier on the loch.

This walk was very beautiful. We went anti-clockwise.

However, we went on a scorching bank holiday Monday and the place was PACKED. Also, be aware that the route shown on this app requires a walk across stepping stones through a shallow river. I can't imagine the stones being a challenge for anyone out walking, but today, because of the queue, it took about 20 min to cross. we ended up walking 5 min back down the trail across a bridge and back up on the far bank. The people in front of us in the queue had still not crossed!

All this to say, it's a stunning walk, with a variety of scenery, a river, woods, open fields and small but challenging changes in elevation. I can only imaging how nice it would be on a crisp winter morning (not the hottest bank holiday Monday since records began!!)

Beautiful area with lovely views. Easy walk on good terrain. Perfect family trip.

in the lower part much midges today, but not up higher, because of the wind and rain. beautiful climbing, pretty rocky and steep. the views are beautiful even today when it was cloudy. the hike is a loop but up on the mountain difficult to find. going round is much more fun.

Did this last year with a friend. Good weather and views were really nice...

just beautiful

had a nice sunny day. took the dog.
the walk was great and the views from the top were fantastic. make sure you take a waterproof because the weather can be very changeable at the top. all in all a fun walk and one very tired dog.

Very nice wieves.

Lovely view on good weather.

Nice view but not an easy hiking. Weather changing so fast so better be ready.

Fantastic hike, agree with prior comments that locating the trail in poor visibility is tough.

steep climb to the top whuch is well worth it just for the amazing view.

This is a relatively easy and pleasant walk that includes open views and short wooded areas. The pathway is predominately tarmac although you can choose to walk on short grass at many parts. It is used for walking, running and cycling. Most users are spatially aware and considerate but it can be busy on dry weekends.
You can choose a variety of alternative paths, mostly woodland, that increases the rise and fall and difficulty level.
