Beautiful views of Brean beach on the one side and Weston-Super-Mare on the other. You can also see parts of South Wales. There is also the very interesting Fort at the far end, which has good views of the surrounding areas.

You can start your walk by going up the steps, which can be hard going if you are not used to the great outdoors, or you can take the tarmac track over to the right of the steps, accessed by walking to the right of the Bird Gardens and along the dirt road. It is a steep hill, but has lovely views of the Estuary, the mud flats and the countryside. This route is also closer to the Weston-s-Mare end of the Downs.

I would say that the terrain on the Downs is easy to moderate, as although parts of the grassy route are flat to a degree, there are short inclined areas. On the far side of the Downs is a track that is relatively flat and leads to the fort, if you prefer a less arduous route. It can be accessed by either the steps or the steep sloped route.

It can be quite breezy to windy up on the Downs and people with dogs should keep them on a lead, as there are sometimes goats or cows grazing and should a dog wander off, there are steep cliff type edges that a dog or even a child could fall from. It is not unknown for one or two dogs a year to meet a tragic end if off the lead.

Walking towards the Fort end of the Downs, on the grass can be tricky, as there are rabbit holes and uneven areas, so if you are a bit unsteady on your feet, I would say that the track on the far side would be better for you, but this is just my opinion.

After walking on the Downs, Brean Cove and beach make a nice relaxing walk, but don’t go too far to the sea if the tide is out, as there are mud flats where your feet get muddy and you sink down into the mud a bit, which can be quite alarming. Also, don’t take your cars too close to the sea either, as there have been quite a few cars that have got stuck or even submerged by the incoming tide. Check tide times. The area is very flat, so if you want a swim or paddle, you’ll want to catch the sea at the right time. I love this area for its beauty and enjoyment of the sea and a good day out. We had a private holiday static for a couple of years and thoroughly enjoyed the Downs, the cove and the beach/sea. Also, dogs are allowed on Brean Cove and Brean Beach all year round, off the lead. So our dogs had a brilliant time too.

Great hike, taking in the views of Brean one side and Weston-Super-Mare the other.
The steps up the hill can be challenging, unless you go the other way round first and do the steps last (still takes it out of your knees).
Recommend looking around Brean Fort, halfway round the route.
