The Pen y Fan and Corn Du trail offers spectacular, unrivalled views of the beautiful Welsh countryside in the Brecon Beacons National Park. Pen y Fan is the highest mountain in South Wales, and a popular destination for walkers. Pen y Fan is translated from the Welsh language to mean ‘top of this place’. The mountain and surrounding area are owned by the National Trust. Pen y Fan, together with Corn Du (trans. Black Horn), it’s secondary summit, was previously named Cadair Arthur, meaning (King) Arthurs Chair. Whilst there are no stories directly linking King Arthur to Pen y Fan, legend has it that Arthur once helped the people of Brecon with a group of wild boars. The King killed the boars’ leader, whose body rolled down into the river, today known as Afon Twrch (river of the boar). Start from the Pont ar Daf car park just south of the Storey Arms. The summit of Pen y Fan is marked by a well preserved and structured Bronze Age cairn which would have originally held the ashes or other remnants of a dead person or persons since multiple burials together are common in the British Bronze Age. From the summit on a clear day the Bristol Channel (including the islands of Flat Holm and Steep Holm), Carmarthen Bay, Swansea Bay, the Gower Peninsula, the Black Mountains, the Cambrian Mountains, Exmoor, the town of Brecon and much of Mid Wales and the South Wales Valleys, and in a north-easterly direction the Clee Hills in South Shropshire can be seen.

Nice and easy walk, busy trail. Pleasant in the summer, snowy in the winter. If visibility is good views are spectacular.

I did this hike back at the end of August 2020 Parking: fills up fast on a good day. We arrived around midday and luckily managed to get parked on the road just outside of the carpark. There is a large car park but also road parking for miles. I did this on a nice sunny day on a Thursday and as imagined it was a conga line to the top, people everywhere. Other than Snowdon this is the most trafficked hike I've ever done. If you are somebody who likes remote hikes, then choose one of the alternative routes to escape the crowds. There is some respite once you reach the top as you can detour and explore the ridge. On the way up make sure you check out Corn Du first, which offers a different view, and then onto Pen Y Fan. The views all round are awesome. To enjoy, take food, a flask of coco, warm clothes and a wind breaker for the summit. This is follows a clear set path. Decent footwear recommended, even though you'll see people taking it on in Vans. If you're an experienced hiker then this particular route will be a walk in the park. If you don't hike usually then it will challenge you, but it's a short trail so it'll be ok!

I do this mountain regularly. It's a great training mountain. Excellent paths. Beautiful views on a clear day but be warned it can be extremely windy at the top on a bad day. Whilst this is a relatively easy and very novice friendly mountain; like any other mountain- respect it.

Great walk. Nice views. It was a little bit hard for me as I wasn’t walking much lately but I managed. Worth any effort.
