Very scenic trail. If you want to finish the whole trail make sure leave yourself plenty of daylight. Most of the path is dry and solid but there are some bits that are a little wet. You can see snow at the side of the mountains, no snow on the paths.

We walked this in the blazing sunshine of 08/08. The route features some pretty hefty climbs and descents if you're not acclimated to that you may struggle. The views from the top are fabulous and though we were never fully alone on the path it was much much quieter than Pen y fan or any other local landmark hikes. The hills and streams were gorgeous and my favourite part was were the path skirts along the lower edge of the ridges on what feels like a small goat path. After the full circuit we swam in the lake which was absolutely wonderful and really helped bring the body temp down after the hike. We all agreed we'd return for the lake swim but maybe take a different route as the full ridge circuit wasn't as enjoyable as an alternative may be. The flies and large amounts of people/groups of people did bring the joy of the views down a little bit but it was still magical. I would definitely say it is in the high end of moderate with some steep climbs and descents.

Where to start with this one! So much to write about. Firstly, you won’t be disappointed. Breathtaking views, amazing lakes, beautiful mountains and a lot of wildlife if you have any interest in that kind of thing. Starting with car parking, there’s typically ample space at the foot of the route because it’s largely grassland and everybody seems to park everywhere. Even arriving at 1pm I didn’t have too much trouble finding a spot. A couple of things to note: I would say that if you are planning on doing the full All Trails route, then I would leave the dog and children at home unless you are comfortable keeping your dog on the lead for the whole walk (there are continuous sheep throughout the trail); and with regards to young kids there are a few very treacherous paths, particularly as you descend on the walk. I would even feel a little way with them in a carrier. Difficulty wise, I would say this walk is somewhere between a moderate and a hard. Doing it solo, I managed to motor along on the second half of the hike to complete in just under 4-hours, but it’s easy to see why All Trails has it listed at 5 1/2 hours. With stops and lunch you would easily reach that. The initial ascent, while hard work, is glorious. Passing over the first lake, you can see why Lonely Planet listed it as a “must see” place for walkers in recent years. It’s clear, calm, and if you fancy a dip - there were definitely people bathing. Once you reach the top, the 360 degree views are incredible. I was lucky to go on a clear day, and you could genuinely see across the Beacons to all the major peaks including Pen y Fan. Impressive for sure, and vindication for the 4km ascent! Once you’re past the ridges and the first lake, I’d suggest any point from there is a good lunch point. There is a second peak that comes with another heftyish ascent, and it’s good to get your breath back before that I would suggest. You can easily see it on the altitude view of the map; but it essence it is the upward curve before you hit the highest point of the walk. The return journey is pleasant, but the descent is quite hard on the knees. Take your time - and at the bottom enjoy the 5km ramble back over what is largely a relatively flat walk. Probably my favourite walk in the Beacons so far; and one to do at the moment certainly given Pen Y Fan is ridiculously busy. Definitely a more quiet track.

One of the best hikes in the Brecon Beacons, with a steep climb up past Llyn-y-Fan Fach up to the top of the ridges of the Carmarthen Fans. We added on an extra climb up to the top of Fan Hir which was worth the ascent for more 360 degree views of Swansea on the coast to Pen-y-Fan and Fan Frynych across the patchwork of countryside fields. The descent down to Llyn-y-Fan Fawr is a little steep, but the final path skirting the sides of the Fans has more of an off-road feeling, with steep drops, a narrow trail, and scrambles over rocks and waterfalls. The views of the Fans from this final path are some of the best views you’ll see up close. Parking at Llyn-y-Fan Fach Car Park fills up quick.
