Dragons Back and Waun Fach is a 7.5 mile loop trail located near Crickhowell, Powys, Wales that features beautiful wild flowers and is rated as moderate. The trail is primarily used for hiking, walking, nature trips, and bird watching.
Fantastic loop from Castle Inn car park. Fairly easy to follow the path, just need to know when it splits.
The trail was super cool! Divided in my opinion into three parts (ascent up dragons back, walking along the top of the mountain and going down) which ensures the walk is varied and captivating - very windy at the top though!!! Cool walk for November, not too cold. Path is clearly visible for the whole way
Parking: I did this hike back on October 13th. When I went it was a week day and only two other cars were parked there, so there were no issues there. There is a little honesty box where you drop in cash, so take change for the parking. This hike is stunning! It starts with a casual meander through some fields, until you reach the inclines to get up onto the ridge. If using MAPS.ME follow the trail line to the T. The trail wasn't obvious at one point and I ended up walking on livestock tracks trying to get back to the trail. Save your lunch stop for the ridge. You'll have 360 views across the Brecons. A third of the trail is along the ridge line, which is the most impressive part. It is ultra windy up there, so bring a wind breaker! After the ridge line the trail back to the carpark is extremely muddy and passes through some small streams (depending on rainfall). You will need to follow a map for this one as it isn't waymarked.
We LOVED the walk but HATED the crazy aggressive car parking tactics. We never carry cash and yet if you didn’t pay in the car park (money only no option to pay via an app) the signage threatened to put stickers on your car. Luckily we found a fiver so overpaid which irritated us beyond belief as we didn’t want to reward this behaviour. The walk itself in our opinion is HARD. very steep in places but they are making the paths better as there were diggers working on the top. Incredible views - Pen y Fan easily visible. Would recommend but the car parking is horrendous.
One of the better walking trails I have done, not too demanding and the scenery is breathtaking as usual in this part of the world, will recommend
Made this walk with 6 y.o. son. Start of the climb was challenging but once on top of the hill, the walk was easy. Absolutely stunning views, very few people on route, so if you like to enjoy complete silence and sounds of nature, this trail is perfect. Tip for walk with kids: take plenty of chocolate as a reward for reaching checkpoints - it is the best motivation ever! :-D
A great little hiking trail with amazing 360 degree views. We’d recommend doing this trail the opposite way round to what’s recorded, steeply climbing the hills to visit the remains of Castle Dinas, scrambling up the Dragon’s Back, then gently ascending Waun Fach. Parking at the Dragon’s Back pub for £2.
I would recommend this walk! Really beautiful even on a cloudy day! Really worth the time out of your weekend! Loved it!
Car park is £2 on the trail side of the road. Did anti-clockwise per the suggestion here. I thought there were better views on the first have when done this way. But pretty good all around, it's more of a steep mountain climb/descent on the second half. Definitely worth the whole round trip. Fairly easy to follow the path, just need to know when it splits.
Fantastic views all the way round, this is one of my favourite walks but is very exposed if you get caught in rain. I’d recommend coming down Dragons back as there are some very steep sections so do this circular route in an anti-clockwise direction. Need to have a decent level of fitness and walking poles may be useful for the climbs and steep descents. Also some muddy sections on the bridleway on early part of walk.
