Getting There

A circular walk from Penallt in Monmouthshire taking in a beautiful stretch of the Wye Valley. Penallt is set high on a hill above Monmouth and the walk begins with a long descent into the valley, before following the path alongside the River Wye and then climbing back steeply into the hills to return to the village. The views throughout are spectacular and in spring the woodlands boast a beautiful carpet of bluebells. A fairly strenuous outing, but well worth it! The walk has several fairly steep and long ascents and descents including some sections with uneven steps cut into the woodland paths. There are a few gates plus five stiles on route, two of which are stone stiles which most dogs (and some humans!) could need help to climb. The paths are mainly mud woodland and river side tracks which will be muddy after wet weather. Approximate time 2.5 hours.

The walk starts from the village of Penallt in Monmouthshire. If you want refreshments before or after your walk then parking is available at the Inn at Penallt, otherwise roadside parking is available near the village green. Approximate post code NP25 4SE.

A nice walk in the wet Welsh weather. Be warned zero phone service at points and tricky hidden signs so take an actual OS map! The Boat Inn in Redbrook is a must for a mid trip pint.

Nightmare route to try follow. The arrows left us in the middle of paths with no further route. Majority of the walk is spent on the road. 20 mins on the river and the rest was spent stumbling through woodland trying to follow the arrows. Very disappointed as spent most of our day wondering aimlessly trying to get back.

Great walk, my 6yo loved it! The uphill was fine, not too hard, and all in all it took us 3.5h with few rests and good packed lunch. A bit too much walk on the road though...

I do this walk and variations of it very regularly, so it takes me a lot less than two hours, but it is a strenuous walk if you're not used to the hills. I was lucky enough to get to know the totem pole sculptor Neil Gow a few years ago while he created this excellent piece on site. He is responsible for many excellent and very local carved sculptures. There's good parking in Redbrook of course if you want to start in England and you get to cross the lovely old railway viaduct across the Wye. The Boat Inn is good too. The Inn at Penallt is currently closed.

Followed this walk today and really enjoyed it. Your directions are spot on and it was easy to follow .... The ascent from the River Wye was a killer although my 15 year old son didn't seem to have any trouble. A really beautiful part of the country...
