Waypoints (4)

String Lake sits at the bottom of the Grand Teton Mountain range and there are gorgeous views from this trail. The lake is a popular spot for swimming and kayaking as the water is crystal clear and calm. Accessibility: The full String Lake Trail loop is not accessible, but the first 0.5 miles from the String Lake Trailhead to the picnic area along the eastern-store of the lake is. The trail is packed dirt but has an uneven surface due to rocks and roots. See the waypoint on the map for where the accessible portion of this trail ends, or the shorter trail can be viewed on its own trail page here: https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/wyoming/string-lake-accessible

HikingGreat!

Our favorite trail of the Tetons. Not very strenous but very beautiful. Includes lake views, forest views and a walk through a meadow of small aspen trees which in september was unreal. The entire trail is like walking through an enchanted forest with the fall colors. Surprisingly not crowded at all, esp. after you pass the Leigh lake junction (we came thursday afternoon at 4:30 pm in late september). Would actually do this trail again if I am ever in the Tetons in the fall again.

This trail is great for planning an easy afternoon. We had drove to the park the day we hiked this and didn’t want to lose the whole day. This was less grueling but still totally beautiful. Once we passed the water, we didn’t see anyone. Some of my favorite pictures that we took of the park were from this trail.

The trail was beautiful. The scenery was amazing. The more you walked the more it changed. We walked in deep forest areas where the colored were spectacular. The hike does lead up to a beautiful view of the lake below. I wouldn’t say this trail was for everyone nor would I say it is that easy if a climb. It is worth it to see Mother Nature at work. I saw a woolly bear caterpillar munching on some leaves. Heard some elk bugling. Pretty spectacular day.

The trail is an easy hike for most of the 4 miles. A little climb and then down. Good mix of lodgepole pine, aspen and brush. Absolutely beautiful views of Tetons and String Lake.

Running

An excellent leisurely hike or trail run. Fairly flat the entire way. Bonus: there is a “hidden” side trail on the western side of String Lake, you can see the trail on the AllTrails map leading up to a lake, and the starting location is accurate. This is a short, steep, less-groomed trail of ~800 ft elevation in 0.7 miles but at the end of this is a STUNNING, small alpine lake. We hiked up at sunset - one of my more memorable moments in the Tetons.

String lake is so beautiful!! A small lake between jenny lake and leigh lake with a bunch of shallow incredibly clear areas to put your feet in or to find a secluded beachy spot to hang out. Golden hour here late afternoon/evening is like paradise. Can get very busy at times.

Awesome relaxing trail. Beautiful lakes and views, Bear sighting that day near the top through the bushes. Parking can be a real challenge, we parked in that first lot before you make the turn towards the street with all the lots, and we walked through the horse trail / field. Added about a mile each way but saved the time finding parking.

Beautiful trail! Maybe a little on the “moderate” side for flat-landers, but should be no problem for anyone acclimated to the altitude.

Nice easy hike! Would recommend going to the other lake outlet where the kayaks can put in. That’s where I had lunch and it was gorgeous! Lots of people swim in the lakes, so if you want peace and quiet (and parking) I would recommend going in the morning!

Great hike, especially the first 50% of the loop, you'll be walking along the lake with lake views from different perspectives. The lake is very shallow and very clear, and it's just beautiful. We were there in the lake area just to do the trail, and the lake was very highly crowded, and we had to wait (just kept circling among the three parking areas they have) for about 30 minutes to find a parking spot. Lot of people come for the water activities, and a lot of them stay long, so you'd be lucky to get a parking spot soon. Go early, we went around noon as we did another hike before this. But the trail was great, wasn't crowded.

We did not hike this but we swam in String Lake after hiking Jenny Lake Trail. It was my favorite part of our entire vacation. The lake is so clear and set in the mountains. Lots of people brought paddle boards/kayaks/etc. The kids hung out by the shore/climbed the rocks. Great place to cool off and relax after the hikes. Parking is TOUGH!! We found a spot - but it took about 10-15 minutes.

We hiked it counter clockwise in the afternoon and also stopped at Leigh Lake - worth it. Took two hours total. We swam at the end near the parking lot. We arrived 430pm and got a spot. Did not see any big wildlife. Easy hike and recommend for an afternoon activity.

Beautiful crystal clear lake. We went on July 4th and so were extremely lucky to get a spot to park... parking heavily restricted by park rangers. Once we got in we realized why.... it’s beautiful and easy to get to but small and could easily be overrun. Once we got on the north side of the trail we ran into very few hikers as most folks were partaking in lake activities. The hike was easy, fun and well marked all the way with a nice variation in terrain and vegetation. Will definitely be on the revisit list next time in Jackson Hole!
