Hiking

Great hike but this alltrails path is inaccurate! There is a trail from granite lake to the top of squaretop and it leaves from the west side of the lake up over a boulder field. The trail is easy to lose and not intuitive. Call the Great Outdoor Shop in Pinedale, WY to get a good understanding of the trail! Many of the other ascent options are dangerous and take much longer. Amazing hike !

BackpackingGreat!

Such a beautiful mountain and trail. From the trailhead you can either take the CDT on the east side of the lake or the Porcupine Trail on the west. We did the CDT on the way out and it is much more scenic, but has very little shade. On the way back we took porcupine and a majority of it was in the trees. Unfortunately we weren’t able to summit Squaretop because I developed bad blisters, so we stopped just short of the base of the mountain. However, the scenery is amazing throughout the entire part we did. There are great places to camp along the trail, we never had an issue finding a place. I want to go back and finish.

Hiking

This is a beautiful hike. But it is not for the faint of heart. The trail is hardly there at all during the ascent. 500-1000’ of acres provides a difficult climb. Until you are met with a Boulder field that provides its own challenges. The final climb is rough, but coming down is even more treacherous. Carins are few and far between on the climb up. Would highly recommend camping near the base and ascending the next day. Views from the top are incredible

Not a full recording, but we kayaked across both lakes and upstream between before hitting the trail. The full summit is very strenuous and a difficult trail that requires a great deal of route finding. Once you cross over the Beaver Creek bridge it's all off trail until you reach Granite Lake some 1300ft straight uphill. From there you follow the water all the way to the top of Squaretop which is another 2800ft upwards with still lots of snow when we went. Upon the summit we postholed a good amount crossing to the front of the summit where it overlooks Green River Lakes. Highly recommend, but be ready for an uphill challenge!
