Snowshoed this route (and further, to the summit of Darton Peak) in December 2019. The trail does not have any serious "grinder" hills, in favor of long flat sections with occasional vertical steps. There was about a foot of powder on the ground at the trailhead, growing to 3-4 feet above 9,000 feet. The route is almost entirely tree covered, which provided welcome wind cover, but also meant views only came at the 2-3 lakes along the way. Rainy lake provided the best views of Bighorn and Darton. A note for anyone unfamiliar with the Cloud Peak Wilderness: There is a closed (wire) gate at the park boundary, about a mile into this route. As long as you are not on motorized equipment, you are meant to hop it.

I’m not sure I would consider this “easy”. It’s a tough uphill rocky route for most of the journey. Obviously easier on the way back. It’s a pretty lake, too bad no fish in it though.

Good trail, but hampered by the mist! Start and finish are the toughest. 2hrs 35minutes all told with a little picnic stop. Rainy lake genuinely does appear to rain in the vicinity of the lake
