One of the best trails anywhere. Not that difficult, but strenuous because of the elevation gain. Go all the way to the Ranger cabin for the full experience. The scenery is spectacular. Take your bear spray because they enjoy the blueberry bushes you pass early on.

Spectacular! Steep climbing the first few miles after entering the Canyon itself, especially with 40 lb packs. Somewhat busy up to the Phelps Lookout, then it is less populated. Met 2 other groups of back packers, at least 3 other groups of day hikers, and 2 groups of hikers that caught a ride up and walked down.

We set up base camp and explored nearly all the south side of the canyon. Two of us are photographers, so it was worth it! Hiked to Fox Creek Pass the last day. So much to see. I suggest camping for at least 3+ days. Next time, we will move camp each day :). I took my 8 year old son with me.

Prepare for Moose and Bear. Critters WILL get into your stuff! ;)

Did the Phelps Lake hike with 5.5 yr grandson the weekend before. Decided to do the longer DCT the next weekend. This is a gentle hike, though the length would make it too much for youngsters, that wanders around some glorious sights. Get an early start to avoid the heat or/and the thunderstorms that crop up often from mid-afternoon to early evening. Bear spray is recommended, as the one picture evidences.
