fun wall ... finding the lake is definitely the highlight but gets a little tedious after that. some beautiful deer on the track was another highlight. enjoyed it but took s wrong turn - make sure you go right from the petrified tree

Beautiful hike, for those who like solitary/intimate hikes and vista views this is a great hike!

First part of hike uphill. Does cut back/forth do not straight up. Rest of hike level. Lots of bugs/flies. Didn’t see any wildlife. Actually missed loop by petrified tree and went wrong way for a bit. Wasn’t impressed with hike.

Nice hike through fields and hills. Beautiful lake with lily pads in bloom. We were lucky and didn’t run into many people. We also saw the bones that others have mentioned. Didn’t see any wildlife but enjoyed the peace and quiet

Started from petrified tree. Whether you start there or at Roose, do yourself a favor and go clockwise so you can break up the ascent. Saw a bison, antelope, black bear (way high on the ridge), and a fox right by the trailhead. If you want the payoff without the trek, you could probably just do the lake from petrified for a quick in and out.

Love this trail. Started at the Petrified Tree parking taking the loop clockwise which turned out be a wise choice. Encountered a total of 5 black bear on this trail as well as a small group of elk. Nice change of scenery throughout the hike and a beautiful lake as well. A morning very well spent.

Idyllic lake is worth the climb.

You share part of the trail with horses so there can be a lot of poop on the trail. We started at the petrified tree and went around lake where we encountered a heavy steam of hikers headed to the tree. The climb down to the lodge was very nice switch backs, shaded with lots of pines. More hikers coming up exhausted from climb up from lodge. We really did not like coming out of the trail into a resort with people everywhere eating their breakfast and shopping the general store. That was very odd and not our idea of hiking. The loop pretty much disappears here and we forged our own way back into the woods and found the trail again. It was grown over poorly marked and we navigated thru high weeds before the trail went straight up the mountain. We thought we were on the wrong trail until we saw one other group doing the loop in the opposite direction. Very poorly maintained trail. The views are amazing but this is a hard vertical climb with a lot of direct sun exposure, make sure your hydrated and fit for a hard climb. Overall the views of the valley and surrounding mountains were very nice.

The trailhead is immediately behind Roosevelt Lodge. If you go that way, it will be a steep climb near the lake. We parked at the other (higher) end of the trail and hiked downhill one-way to the Lodge. This is only possible with a second vehicle, but it made the trail pretty easy! Carry bear spray, as we saw 8 black bears in the area in just a couple of days! 3.5/5

Lots of wildflowers this time of year. My GPS says this is a 3.5 mile hike. Go in the afternoon to miss the crowds.

Good barrier hike through sage brush fields and along meadows. Saw some bison and a fox in the portion after the petrified tree. Great lunch spot along the lake as well.

It's so amazing around the lake area. My boyfriend and I saw many bear footprints yet we didn't see any. However, many bisons and birdies on the way. There was a huge skeleton (part of it) next to the lake with the head bone far away from its body, which giving a mysterious color to the trail^_^

Fairly quiet trail with great views of Lost Lake and you can see Lost Lake Falls from above by traveling a touch further east.

Another beautiful meadow loop. The falls are a worthwhile offshoot trail. Wildflowers everywhere and the small lake is serene. Would be a good trail for a picnic.
