Early summer in the Bighorn Sheep Refuge near Du Bois, to Lake Louise. Camped overnight, through a huge rainstorm, and left the next day. As hard going down as it is going up.
I did this hike with my husband and our dog. It was harder than I expected. Maybe being from Ohio has me not used to the elevation but I struggled. The trail is a mix of paths and scramble. The waterfall is pretty cool and is seen in multi areas. Trail seemed longer than 2.5 miles to get to the lake. But once we got there the lake was gorgeous. It was fantastic to soak our feet after the hike up. This was definitely not 5 miles round trip...it was more.
Moderate ups and downs beautiful amazing water fall at lake Louise and glacier Trail Junction.
Beautiful views along this hike and at the lake. We did it with our dogs. Two people in the group did it with kids on their backs in packs and said it seemed a bit challenging with them not regularly hiking. The parking lots were quite full. There's an out house bathroom. You can get to various trails from this trailhead. The road in is gravel but doable in a car. We saw a bighorn right by the road. The hike has you going up and down for the trail.
No easy good place to actually relax by the lake plus mosquitoes are like hummingbirds and there are a lot of them, deet worked however, they were hovering but left me alone surprisingly. Worth getting close to the waterfall at the origin, no mosquitoes, I had an excellent lunch and a nap there. Nice trail.
Gateway Lake to the northern Wind River Range! It is a Beautiful hike. We hiked on a warm day and it is pretty hot at the start. But it shifts to alpine climate a couple of miles in and feels cooler. If you have a dog, bring water for the beginning and end. But the last 1.5 miles there is enough to keep them cool.
6/26/20: we started the hike yesterday about 12:45pm. It was a hot one; very little shade. The first 1/4 mile you can take a left at the fork and walk the couple feet to the bridge with overview of falls (we saved that for our way back). Trail was very worn in, easy to follow. The river was flowing! I’ve never seen so much power or energy - not sure if it was the time of year, but it was flowing hard. Lake Louise is breathtaking. Found some rocks to lay out on, eat a snack and cool our feet off in lake. It took us 4-1/2 hours total but we took lots of pictures and hung at the lake for a while. You can get to the top in an hour. Will definitely be back
I did this with my gf who is hardly a hiker but has been logging a few miles “training” to walk a half marathon. She was exhausted, says it was one of the hardest hikes she has ever done. I hike and bike a lot and I thought it was a moderate plus hike but well worth the effort. Such beautiful country. Both strava and all trails came in close to 6 miles.
Beautiful hike! Nice mix of Rocky and wooded terrain. Beautiful stream all along trail with rushing water over the rocks. Had lunch at the lake, fantastic view. Our dog loved the trail too. Highly recommend for nice day hike.
This is a very nice moderate hike up to the Alpine lake. it does have a few steeper sections but there are also flat sections to catch your breath. The drive to the trailhead through the box canyon to the back of it winds past a few lakes. there are areas of shade along the trail as well as woods that you will hike through. a nice varied topography. as you near the last section you will come across a trail junction with the Glacier Trail. if you veer off to the left here, after about 100', you will come across a bridge which has a wonderful view of the river rushing down through the nartow. canyon walls.
May 29, 2019. Beautiful sunny day and only saw three other groups of hikers. The trail was still a bit muddy but didn't have trouble passing any wet/muddy areas.
