This is a beautiful trail along the Encampment River starting at the Odd Fellows Campground and heading south to the Commissary Park Trailhead on the state line with Colorado. This trail can also be done as an out-and-back. Another way to enter the river is from the Purgatory Gulch Trailhead. The Purgatory Gulch Trail goes for ~2 miles, eventually reaching the Encampment River Trail. The road to the Purgatory Gulch Trailhead is very rough and 4WD is recommended. 2WD vehicles can reach the Odd Fellows Trailhead listed on this page. Be careful and check conditions as there is often downed trees on this trail. Alternatively, visitors can start on the southern end at the Commissary Park Trailhead and head north.

Streams were too hard to cross with the river being overflowed.

We started from the bottom of the canyon which was awesome. It started with a few houses but then opened up to trees and the river after about a mile. There were a few streams that we had to climb over as there wasn’t a bridge, but it was definitely doable. As we went in, there were about 3-4 predetermined camping spots on the river that were gorgeous and shady. We stayed at one about 6 or 7 miles in right off the river. We attempted to go further, but not too long after the trail became hard to climb through. There were a lot of trees that had fallen over and the trail was overgrown. For a while it was fun, like some light bushwhacking, but after about a mile the trail all but disappeared. The part we did was beautiful and very fun, though! Definitely would recommend for the first few miles and for an overnight!

This was lovely. Saw abundant wildlife, and it’s like spring here! We did not go too far as weather was iffy, but would come back for sure!

We hiked this nice trail along the Encampment River. The trail start has some homes along the river and no trees, but the homes end after a half mile and trees start shortly thereafter. Spring just starting in the area (Apr 21). Only hiked 2.5 miles in, would have loved to keep going but the weather forced a turnabout.
