Hiking

We did this hike on a chilly and rainy day in September, but that meant we pretty much had the trail to ourselves. Didn't seem as steep anticipated on the way up. Great views from the overlook and up into the canyon, though it was quite foggy and ominous looking. Saw a pine marten along the trail while circling the lake which was pretty neat. Overall great hike.

Hiking

Great views throughout the hike as the trees open periodically. More enjoyable to start @ this trailhead and get the overview of the lake at the start & end of the trip.

Really nice trail. The lake is beautiful. Make sure to drive all the way to the actual trailhead. You may see cars parked starting ~0.5 miles away, but unless it's super busy there'll likely be spots closer to the trailhead. No 4x4 required for us in mid October. The sign should probably say "Road is super uneven. Drive slowly to avoid bottoming out." Maybe it's different when it's wetter out, but we had no trouble with our front-wheel-drive crossover SUV.

Started late so we didn’t do the loop around the lake. Nice trail. Saw a bear. Road to trailhead gets a little rough toward the parking lot.

Took us exactly 4 hours (10 miles) and we parked about .75mi from the trailhead. Beautiful views and def worth it. I thought this was tough hike actually, even through the actual lake loop was flat. We saw a bear about 100 feet from finishing the trail

Took the Death Canyon Trail to Phelps lake jumping rock on the northeastern side of the lake. Was a beautiful hike and Phelps lake is stunning. Death Canyon Trail provided some great encounters with wild life.

Beautiful hike with moderate elevation. Start early because trail got very crowded in the afternoon. Road is extremely rocky and parking is limited by trail head. Take plenty of water. Saw a bear right off the trail eating berries.

Super fun hike. The canyon part is definitely moderate. The loop around the lake is pretty easy. Jumping off the rock at Phelps lake is a MUST! Then dry off while you eat some lunch at the lake, then continue your hike. Saw a bear which was equal parts terrifying and amazing. Tons of wildflowers and little brooks throughout the hike.

Amazing! Went counter clockwise to get around the lake and end at the rock. Super fun. Saw a baby grizzly bear!! Definitely recommend. Just know there are a lot of inclines at the beginning and end! Lots of water, snacks, and a towel if you are jumping!
