Start out at the liberty cap. Head up through mostly woods and meadows past a few steams and ponds. Went counterclockwise. Views of the northern edge of the park from the top. Came back down through Mammoth Hot Springs. Nice way to get away from the crowds for a little while and burn off breakfast. Didn’t see any animals but maybe didn’t go early enough. Overall, worth the workout.
Lovely, short hike. Didn’t cross paths with anyone on the trail. We went counterclockwise, which was a more sustained, gradual incline. Mostly flat or downhill the last few miles. Would recommend that those going counterclockwise use the AllTrails map as a guide as there were 3 or 4 areas that we thought were or had the potential to be confusing.
Very cool short hike away from Yellowstone’s crowds. We saw one other hiker after we turned off the beaver pond trail. Relatively steep.
Great hike. Pretty difficult the first half, but cake after that. Saw lots of elk that we first mistake as a bear because all we could hear were branches snapping until they emerged out of the trees. I gave 4 stars because we got off the trail for about half a mile on the seplechure section of the trail. Not well marked, so be aware if doing the loop counter clockwise.
