Really gorgeous park with a nice large loop that goes through some beautiful prairie areas with lots of wildflowers. It was a little confusing trying to figure out which trails to follow--some of them led to road crossings and condo neighborhoods and intersect with a fairly busy bike path, but then there are larger longer portions of unpaved trail that are quite different. Some areas are covered with slightly springy boardwalks (over marshy areas). Not a consistently "away from urban areas" park, but there are some really stunning parts. You can have your dog but really needs to be on leash.

Clean and easy loop trail with no obstacles. The loop is a big square. The northern edge is in prairie. The main attractions are a cold bubbling spring with nice Boardwalk where one can touch the water, and a minor hill with 150ft vertical gain. Locally known as the picnic hill, the top offers panoramic views of Madison state Capitol and surrounding glaciated areas. The hill top also features five Native American effigy mounds. The western edge goes into the woods and crosses a couple bridges. The southern edge is on a loooong Boardwalk. After crossing one more bridge the eastern edge emerges onto prairie again, passing through a water tower, and enters Orchid Heights park with facilities. Sandhill cranes are occasionally sighted.

Great loop trail, perfect for a stroll, run, bike ride, or dog walk.
The hilltop features Native American burial mounds, and the view from the peak is worth checking out.

I love this trail! I run, walk and bike it at least 3-4 times per week. Great for bird and wildlife watching: sandhill cranes, goldfinch, woodpeckers, hawks, turtles, etc...
