HikingGreat!

Nice little loop trail. It was quiet since the main gate is not open yet. Accessed the trail via the Fisherman's Trail. There is an overlook that can be added to the hike. Trail access for that is by campsite 29 in the campground. It is one mile totally uphill to the overlook. No switchbacks. The view is well worth the effort. I have frequently visited Trout Pond recreation area for years. I was pleasantly surprised by this trail. We usually just swim, kayak, and camp. I will definitely revisit this trail. It is close to home and not very crowded.

The road into the campground is closed in the winter months, but there is a trailhead before the gate, and you can walk the blue hill trail to the lake loop.

There were some very pretty parts but also an odd part where the trail went right through a maintenance area. On the easier side of moderate.

Pretty decent trail. the end and beginning is hard, but other wise an easy trail. At one part you will be on a main road to the state park and no trail markers.

easy walk around the lake, perfect for those who don't hike much and those who have younger children. The path follows along the lake for most of the walk.

We started on the Junior Poe trail, connected to the Chimney Rock trail and headed towards the Trout Pond loop. All of the trails were well maintained, with very lite traffic until it meets up with the Camp ground at Trout pond recreation area. There were a ton of people and the signs are a bit confusing and difficult to follow in the camping area. Over all we had a great day with our dog.

Full disclosure: I did not do the full loop. instead we took the 0.9 mile loop that runs tightly around the pond. It was a clear, flat trail with lots of interesting things to check out. one side of the pond is hugged by steep rock cliffs. At one point you can walk straight through a really cool natural rock wall. There are signs all over stating not to climb, but there is room to walk in and around the rocks. We did the trail with 6, 4, and 1 y/o (in a carrier) and it was excellent. Cool off after with a dip in the pond, there is a sandy beach that extends into a roped off swimming area.

I would say that the trail to get to the loop is moderate. All downhill on the way to the loop trail which means all uphill on the final leg of your journey. The loop trail was nice. Pretty views of the pond. Trail was a bit unclear in some areas. We started on a blue blazer trail, then went to orange, then purple, then back to blue. I took my 6 year old granddaughter and she did ok. Wore her out! Will definitely have to come back and check out the park more!

10:10 AM start hike to overlook. Starts out with tough uphill climb on a gravel road with a short initial stretcher big gravel. The sky is mostly overcast but the sun does occasionally peak out. Low 70s. Basically straight up hill with no switching back. Nice little creek on the E side of the trail early in the hike. All-wheel-drive Trails straight up. Mountain laurels space along the side. 10:46 AM at the Lena constable Overlook overlooking the valley to the NW. Moderate fog Clouds the view but three or four ridgelines are visible. Nice overlook Display board with a drawing showing the ridges and mountains in view. At the Overlook we try successfully to call Bulltown Corps of Engineers campground and determined that there was a site available this weekend. Then I called recreation.gov and with a very weak signal made the reservation. Thank goodness for that lady at Bulltown was nice enough to work with us and give us the number of the site. Continued hike to circle Rockcliff Lake. 12:50 PM while crossing the dam earth damn we noticed the skies are looking much better and much more blue. We saw a red shouldered hawk in full flight cross the dam. On the return we saw/read several tree species educational plaques on the trail. 1:20p returned to site.

March 31st is a perfect day to go. Great temps , not many people at the lake or the trail. Went with my 4 year old and he did well ,even in the up hill switchbacks . Nice family trail and lovely lake especially when no tourists around .

One of our favorite day hikes - good for kids and adults. The lake area can be crowded in the summer but most of the trail is pretty low usage. The stream crossing below the dam can be tricky when the water is high. If you want to cut the hike a little short, you can walk over to the main trail from the swimming area, and skip the eastern side of the lake.
