Red Ash via Southside Trail is a 7.7 mile lightly trafficked out and back trail located near Fayetteville, West Virginia that features a river and is rated as moderate. The trail offers a number of activity options and is best used from March until October. Dogs are also able to use this trail but must be kept on leash.
Didn't meet another person all the way out and back. Nice walk with interesting ruins along the way.
Red Ash Island- if you hike to it and back you will get more like 2.5-3 miles instead of 7. The island hosts a cemetery for the mine disasters that happened in Red Ash and Rush Run mines. As well it served as a quarantine site for the smallpox epidemic that happened in the communities. In the 1940’s, a baseball field was even constructed on the island. Many of the graves today are only marked with field stones.
