HikingGreat!

We had a great hike! Took my 8 year old daughter. Very flat and easy to walk. We couldn’t find the cemetery, even after asking several people. We hiked 3 miles out and back for a total of 6.44 miles.

Great flat trail. It was a bit muddy yesterday after all the rain. We didn’t get to see Red Ash Island but the coke ovens were cool.

Nice trail. Way better in the winter months as there is more visibility of the many interesting things to see and adventure around to include the coke ovens.

Red Ash Island- if you hike to it and back you will get more like 2.5-3 miles instead of 7. The island hosts a cemetery for the mine disasters that happened in Red Ash and Rush Run mines. As well it served as a quarantine site for the smallpox epidemic that happened in the communities. In the 1940’s, a baseball field was even constructed on the island. Many of the graves today are only marked with field stones.

Fun easy trail. Really dry considering how much it has rained lately. Definitely family and pet friendly.
