Extremely muddy. I would have given 2 or 1 stars if it was any warmer and the ice off the mud had melted. I’d be willing to say it’s unhikable without getting messy in any warmer weather. The view was cloudy for me but that doesn’t bother me nor affect rating. I’d do this hike on a frosty day so you can walk on frozen mud and leaves instead of swampy mud! Happy trails!

Oh It was muddy as all get out through the logging area. I broke my own rule and went off the trail to avoid twisting my ankle, but stuck as close as I could! The trail after the logging was great! We had a blast reading the log books from the mailbox! Take your time through the logging and enjoy it, it’s worth it :)

Definitely muddy like the other reviews say. Best bet is to trudge through the woods. Well marked and nice views along the way. Also check out the Maryland/West Virginia marker #3, which is near the highest point.

I'm sure this was a nice trail at one point but it's a mess now due to the logging. About a quarter mile of the trail is destroyed is a big muddy mess. Where the trail area would be wasn't walkable for the most part, I sunk to my ankles when I tried, so had to navigate through the woods instead. once you get past the destroyed area, the trail is nice and has a good view and markers at the summit.

Super muddy and the logging makes it difficult. Still worth the extra effort! Somewhat easy as high points are concerned.

Very muddy logging road for the first 1/3, then a nice smaller logging road that was less rutty and muddy. Hiked it with my 3 year old son in the dark/mud/snow - it would surely be easier in the daylight and warmer months or when it’s cold enough to freeze the giant ruts.

Yes, there’s logging. Yes, it’s frustrating. Yes, you can get around it. It’s super muddy and the snow started coming in like crazy today (10/17) but the hike is still do-able. It sounds like they’ll be done with the logging soon and the ground is starting to freeze, so hopefully it’ll be a bit less messy soon! Views from the top are great, especially if you’re there after a recent snow!

As high points go, this one is a quick and easy one. The logging on the trail, while a little frustrating, is easily avoided. Don't let it deter you, as you can easily go through it, down the logging road, or around it. It only impacts the lowest quarter of the trail or so. This isn't really worth it for the hike itself, but it is a nice easy highpoint to knock off your list. Expect about an hour roundtrip at a moderate pace.

This was a sad day indeed for anyone who loves the Maryland High Point ( Hoye Crest) Trail. Major logging operations are blocking the first part of the trail, and will almost certainly leave extensive damage when they leave. I am so sad today.

Usually a great hike but Logging is blocking the trail - Can't believe someone sold logging rights on this trail.

Logging is blocking the trail. There are private roads that are near the high point so I drove up and parked on some side road and hiked over to the peak.

There are some majors issues with the lower part of the trail. Logging is going on the trail. We bushwhacked up to the south of the actual trail and still had to avoid some equipment and traverse a muddy road. Coming down, we went to the clear cut area, and skirted it to the north but still had to deal with mud and downed trees. Still made it to the top, but it is not the easy jaunt for the time being.

We did this for my husbands 70th birthday. The foliage was at peak season. Go now if you are reading this. I use two walking poles so it was fine as a moderate rating. Actually harder for us coming down. Make sure to go all the way to the mailbox and sign in at the top. Wonderful view.

Trailhead was actually pretty easy to find. It’s not marked but when you see it, you’ll know. Took us about 50 minutes to climb up since we weren’t expecting how steep it actually was, but the view at the top was worth it.

Easy hike, hike is mostly in West Virginia, then at the end you hit the Maryland state line. A moderate uphill. Met a very inspirational woman who was hiking this trail 60 times before her 60th birthday as her “quarantine project”. We were lucky to meet her on her 58th time up!

Trail was an old logging road. Pretty easy to hike, the real star is the high point more than the trail itself.
