The trail is moderate to hard. It has an eroded path. Finding the trail was difficult. The parking lot sign says Short Creek. I had to walk around to find the trail.

The trip down to the mine is not really a trail but more of a gravel road. The mine building is neat to see. Beware, the trip down to the old town is much farther and as many have stated a bit rough. Other than the Headhouse, there are other much better trails in the area.

First off thanks to everyone who left reviews this is a beautiful trail with lots of amazing rock formations. Here’s a bit of gear advice if you find the trail to be difficult go to your local gear store and buy a set of poles the extra support points change the difficulty level to easy. There was a tree blown down across the trail and washouts makes it narrow at some points. The grade makes descending more difficult then coming back up. The head house and old mine cars are super cool. There is a trail down to the old town and tipple which is fairly difficult and steep very overgrown and I’d recommend wearing pants to avoid stinging nettles. I still would rather do the hike then brave the narrow treacherous road down to the bottom

Hike to the old mine entrance was great but the trail was a little overgrown so wearing long pants is recommended.

The trail is a little steep. The road is rutted out from rain. It is not a bad home though just a little rough if you are out of shape coming back up the hill. I would rate it moderate just because of these reasons. It is well worth it for the look at the old coal facility at the bottom.

First, I’d consider the Headhouse Trail to be moderate. It’s not for the faint of heart. Be aware that the return trip is all uphill and often steep. If you decide to proceed, you’ll find several crevices and caves to exlplore in the rocks, which is really fun. Slippery, but fun. The views into the woods below are very pretty. At the bottom, you see the old mine, which is really cool. The air coming out is cold and feels nice on a hot Summer day. The trip back up is no joke. Be prepared to sweat and get short of breath!

It’s rather steep when coming back up the trail. Would consider it moderate rather than easy. The mining equipment is really cool to see, and the cold air coming out of the old mine was refreshing!

There is great parking at the Short Creek lot and facilities. The cliffs and caves are amazing. The mine is very cool. It’s great we still have this to explore. The connecting Conveyor Trail to the old mine town Nuttalburg is very steep and difficult. Walking stick is a necessity.

Trail is in bad shape between the mine and town from past heavy rains. Hope they work on it soon before winter! Logged 5.47 round trip. Love the history in this location.
