The man at the visitor center looked at my kids and I and implied that this trail would be too hard for us. It wasn't. The hike to the lower town, using this trail, it's a lot of walking but not that difficult. We modified it and crossed over and and went up the AT and then over to the AT conservancy. Going up that part of the AT was quite strenuous but the visitor center trail wasn't bad. It's very pretty coming down from the visitor center to the road. You follow along a waterfall and it's quite lovely. My kids (4 and 5 at the time) LOVED it. The lower part of town is quite pretty along the banks of the Shenandoah, be sure to add that part on if you modify like we did.
