Turkey Spur Rock is neat. We actually saw some juvenile turkey vultures at the top. The Grandview Rim trail itself didn't have a whole lot to offer. It generally followed the road, and didn't have any real good views. If we did it again we'd do Castle Rock and loop back to the grandview parking lot. Then drive down to Turkey Spur Rock.

Beautiful views! Although the steps get me every time going up to Turkey Spur but then I have sciatica nerve in my left leg. And I had done two trails in Grandview on this trip. I push myself and never let my leg pain stop me. Get out and enjoy the trails and our state parks surrounding us! You won’t regret it!

This trail has so many great things going for it. 75 percent of it is rather flat. This helps cause we have a 3 year old. 2 Amazing views on each end of the trail. We were 15 feet from a Turkey Vulture at the top of the wooden stairs on the Turkey lookout. The Rhodadendrums provide amazing shade for about 50 percent of the hike. Dangerous in areas with a kid so carry him over these sections of the trail. I would go back for sure!!!

HikingGreat!

Beautiful and interesting place! We did this trail in conjunction with the Castle Rock trail (which was super cool- with huge boulders and massive rock walls)! Sweet spot to check out :) The downfall though, (unfortunately ) is that I enjoyed the hike way more than the actual end of this trail. Those who obviously don't respect nature have completely trashed it at overlooks at top of the stairs!

You can do the drive versus the trail for anyone unable to do a hike due to handicap etc. What blows my mind, is this is a gorgeous hike and a beautiful view. But some idiots have spray painted profanity including penises all over turkey spur overlook. Of all the states I’ve hiked in. West Virginia has them all beat on tons of litter on every trail and cuss words graffiti on every rock. Sad sad world.

It was a very nice trail with an 8 and 5 year old. The hardest sections were toward the end. In general it was flat and very level ground.

This hike was very pleasant. Mostly flat until you get to the turkey spur lookout. At the beginning of the trail there are some excellent sections of rhodedendron that form almost an arch/tunnel that you walk through. Several great lookouts right in the first quarter mile of the trail. The second half of the trail close to turkey spur lookout does run very close to the road in many sections, although the road was not too heavily trafficked so it wasn’t all that disturbing to us.

This trail is a good trail for beginners as it runs along the Gorge rim and provides lots of beautiful views of the river. There are numerous short spurs to overlooks. Many of these overlooks have stone ledges to sit on. Portions of the trail are through rhododendron thickets. During leaf on seasons there is plenty of shade. Leaf off seasons provide continuous views of the Gorge. Most of the trail is easy terrain with width and good surfacing. As one approaches the Turkey spur end trail gets steeper with rock steps. Turkey spur overlook is a wooden structure with stairs leading to expansive views of the gorge. In May is a special time to visit the trail and park as the rhododendrons bloom.

the canyon trail is literally right beside the road , so you can just park somewhere and get the view. Turkey spur is just an over look , I would recommend just going to the outlook of Turkey spur due to the same view at each trail anyways. hope this helps!

This trail was beautiful. Large rocks for climbing, my toddlers handled it with ease, and stunning views. Can't wait to go back again. Wooden stairs are slippery when wet.

this is an OK trail. it is pretty in spots, but others line a roadway. there are some place to lookout over the river below. but it's a lot of uneventful walking between views. if you need your "steps" then it's a good walk. if you need a hike then try endless wall or something else.

For this trail being my first solo adventure, I would definitely say this is an awesome hike and location. You have several places to see the awesome view so if you want to stop and turn around, you can. I probably would rate it as a moderate, not easy, level trail because there are some treacherous drop offs and I definitely didn’t want to look down especially on my way back and I wouldn’t want to bring my dog either. A lot of it is along side the road so you can cheat if you want (I didn’t) but I saw a lot of people that were so that is kind of lame. Oh and there was a very large tree blocking the path but it’s super easy to get around it. Cheers

This was an awesome trail! It wasn’t very long, so I was able to do it before my other plans later that afternoon. Many gorgeous views along the way to stop at and take pictures. Easy hike overall, as another reviewer said, the toughest part is the stairs, but overall not bad at all. One confusing area was I got to the road and thought I had made a wrong turn so I went back and then realized I hadn’t. I just needed to go a bit further and the trail does follow the road down to Turkey Spur Rock. The only reason 4 stars and not 5 is because there are other trails I enjoy more, but I will definitely be going on this trail again.

Easy hike. The best views you can just drive to them. Not challenging or satisfying

Relatively easy trail with a fair amount of vistas showing the Gorge the whole way. Take the road on the way back for a beautiful pine tree tunnel!

Beautiful views along the trail and the only strenuous part seemed to be the stairs. Great rocks on the way as well even though someone wrote "Bong Rip Cove" on one of them

Grandview is a hidden gem on the New River Gorge, up river from the bridge but well worth the short drive to get there. the park is well-maintained and the trails are smooth and wide. Park by the Visitor's Center and take in the nearby overlook for a great panorama of the gorge. Then head north along the Turkey Spur trail that will take you to another great observation deck with views in several directions. About half way to Turkey Spur there will be gorge overlooks where you can see an oxbow loop around Backus Mountain or War Ridge across the gorge. I was quite impressed with this park, the trail network, and the overlooks.

Gorgeous hike! We were a little too early for the rhododendrons, but we have every intention of going back when they're in bloom!

First to Review

At the beginning of the trail, there are two options. If you take the lower trail, just below the rim (marked #4 on the official trail maps), you are rewarded with a spectacular, rugged, difficult (but short, ~0.4 mile) hike that then joins with the main trail (#5) on top of the rim. Or you can take the #5 trail the whole way. Most of #5 trail is easy walking in very pleasant woods and rhododendrons. The views are truly spectacular. Great hike.
