The first half mile or so is a steep incline but after that it's smooth sailing. Great views of both Virginia and West Virginia. Tip: Walk passed the Big Schloss cut off and go about a half mile more to look back at it.

Loved this trail! There are plenty of views along the way and the summit has lots of space to sit down and take in the views. Very cool to look down at VA on one side and WV on the other as you hike along the state border line. I would rate this hike on the easier side of moderate, and it took us a little over 3 hours to complete with a dog.

We did this as a Sunday outing. We got there around 11am and there where maybe a dozen cars at the parking lot. It was not crowded, but again, covid19 is propably keeping people out. It was very nice, moderate hike. It took us about an hour and a half to get up, but we did also wait a quite a bit to let people pass with 6ft distance. it was only an hour to get down. Hiking boots are good due to the rocks, and we cooked warm trail lunch on the windy top that was excellent. Trail is very well marked.

Great trail. It starts behind the restrooms near camp site #9. It took my family (along with our Morkie dog) about 3 hrs total. Like other reviewers said, the beginning is steep but a great workout. Then nice walk along the ridge and the last 1/4 mile is also steep. Well marked trail. Rewarding view at the end with a sturdy bridge to get to the rocks overlooking VA on one side and West VA on the other. Bring a lunch. Trail is very rocky so hiking boots would be better than sneakers (although we all had sneakers and could still hike it). Not crowded but this is for a March day during Coronavirus.

My 12 y/o terrier and I did Big Schloss from Wolf Gap Rec on a 65* bright sunny day in February. We ran into 6 other groups of hikers - can't imagine how busy it gets in the peak seasons. The first mile is the physical challenge. After that it's pretty level and easy going. Everyone we saw today was over the age of 50 if that's helps any readers. The views are magnificent, and captured at more spots than just the end of the hike. Well marked trail the whole way. Some great spots for a picnic up there. Overall this was a highly rewarding hike both visually and physically. Will be doing it again soon for sure.

Awesome hike. The first mile will definitely get your heart beating as it is mostly uphill. The terrain was very rocky so I will add my voice to the chorus of others who recommended stable footwear; I usually hike in trail shoes but was incredibly glad I took their advice. The views are absolutely spectacular from the top. After visiting Big Schloss, I continued on the trail for another few miles. The trail just goes deeper into the woods; there is not much to see. I think I ended up walking 5 miles deep and turned around, completing 10 miles total, which took around 5 hours.

Great hike along a beautiful ridge line. However the trial is too congested. I suggest going early in the morning or during the week so you can really appreciated an isolated view at the top.

The first mile-ish is very steep and challenging but the rest is mostly easy to hike! Views are very worth it.

Great uphill to start the hike, then a smooth walk along the ridge to a great view. Accurately rated and well kept!

This trail has some of the most spectacular views around. It offers a 360 degree panaroma at the top that is incredible. Well worth the hike which itself isn't too hard.

Stunning views! This trail is officially one of my favorites! You have a great view pretty soon after reaching the top of a steep uphill trek. Then, Big Schloss at the very top is just breathtaking with so many places to overlook the mountains. And if you hazard the big boulders at the end, you get, probably, a good 300 degree view of the mountains. Just incredible! Definitely wear good ankle support and have a pole or walking stick if possible. Lots of loose rocks on the trail but totally worth it!

Like others have said, it's all uphill and rocky at the beginning. But the views on top are amazing, especially with the current fall foliage! I would definitely recommend this hike but maybe not in the middle of summer when it's hottest. Pretty crowded but honestly not too bad for a nice Saturday in fall.

First mile is fairly challenging with continuous incline and rocky terrain. View along the ridge line is gorgeous and easy. Pretty heavily trafficked. Definitely take all the short side paths along the ridge for the best views!

Trail starts off steep and rocky, with little to offer in the way of scenery... About a mile in the trail reaches the ridgeline, opening up fantastic overlooks. Hiked mid day, not much wild life to see other then numerous dogs that accompanied hikers on the well traveled out and back trail. The trail eventually leads to a bridge which takes you to a outcropping of rocks, that offer 360 views of postcard worthy Virginia scenery, making the hike well worth the effort. The way back is a breeze, and easily completed in a fraction of the time.

This is an excellent trail for the views on top. The trail does have some loose and sharp rock so wear good shoes! Our dogs did great. I was a little worried about the sharp rocks, but no worries!
