The first half mile or so is a steep incline but after that it's smooth sailing. Great views of both Virginia and West Virginia. Tip: Walk passed the Big Schloss cut off and go about a half mile more to look back at it.

Solid hike! The first .5 miles is uphill, then it’s typical hiking terrain. Definitely a popular hike so I recommend trying to go earlier.

BEAUTIFUL trail! Amazing overlooks. It’d saying this trail is difficult because there are many parts that are straight uphill, but there are many places to rest on the way up the mountain.

Great trail, but I would say it was a steep incline for the first mile or so. And rocky. Muddy at the start too. The views were spectacular once you hit the grassy area. Crossed the bridge and there is a great rock scramble, but we were wiped. We haven’t hiked in a while nor kept up with our fitness now 10 weeks into quarantine and this proved to be a tough trail. Take plenty of water. Took about 2.5hrs up with plenty of breaks and about 1.5hrs down.

Did with my family today. Youngest kid is 4 and she spent the whole way up on my back but walked down herself. Great short hike! Challenging enough to make it feel like you accomplished something and rewarded with great views and fun rocks for the kids to scramble and on. Parking lot was jammed packed.

Parking is a little messy due to being located within a campground. The hike itself was moderately difficult and rewarding. The beginning is pretty tough but it’s smooth sailing from there.

This is a pretty nice hike. The first half mile maybe a little more is very steep. It’ll get your heart racing but once you pass that point then it is easy. Amazing view. We saw a rattle snake . I’m actually thankful it rattles cause we had not seen it so we moved out of the way. I recommend it. We saw couple of people with dogs.

Camped at wolf gap, hiked to Big Schloss. Great scenery, nice free campsite!! Another trail southbound along the state line has a lot of great views as well.

The first mile of the trail is pretty steep and slick, but after that it’s a pretty easy journey to the top. The views are incredible and there are tons of perfect areas to hammock with views and avoid the foot traffic of the path. I would wear hiking sandals rather than runners because the first part is always wet and muddy so your socks will undoubtedly get wet. Big Schloss is worth the effort, the views are too good to pass up.

The trail is open now! Very popular on a sunny Sunday, but after 3 pm almost deserted. Not too difficult inclines, one in the first 0.75 miles and one in the last 0.25 miles. It is rocky though, so footwear with ankle protection is preferable. Panoramic views on two beautiful mountain valleys from the top. Nice hike for the whole family.

Water on the first part of the trail and as others noted the first .8 miles was blood pumping. Easy to access and follow from the southeast part of the picnic/campground. Beautiful views from the top looking to WVa and into Shenandoah County, but you have a quarter mile of incline off the Mill Mtn trail to reach your goal. Actual distance was closer to 5 miles round trip.

Wear water resistant shoes or bring extra socks as you will be hiking up a creek bed for the first stretch of trail.

Hiked it right after a rain storm so a wee bit muddy and wet, but not too bad. Beautiful 360 degree views from the top. Very view people on the trail as well.

Steep, wet, and rocky at the start followed by a hike along the ridge. Some of the best views in the area to see the rolling hills and valley. Plenty of nice resting and photo spots along the way. Well defined trail for the entirety. Fairly crowded and parking is limited so get an early start.

Such a great trail for moderate hike! This time includes a good stop at the top of the overlook. A little too rocky for trail running, though.
