anyone saying the trail is in good shape clearly did not do the whole trail. The upper end the lake the trail is nearly impossible, trees are not only fallen over the trail, but on the trail (like the hole length of the tree is on the trail so the trail vanishes) we lost the trail on several occasions and turned back after only a few minutes.
I've tried two different parts of the trail now by the upper trailhead and both were impassable. Maybe the part of the trail by the Dam is in good shape but the other end of the trail is not. Do not expect to be able to complete the whole loop unless you have a chainsaw and machete it's in desperate need of maintenance.

The trail meanders around the lake, but not on the shore most of the time. Some parts of the trail are almost completely obscured with overgrowth. Lots of opportunity to fight with brush and spiders! Better start this one early in the day, as it is 16 miles around, not 12. We have 2 GPS devices to verify the mileage. Nice hike, but not a spectacular trail as the scenery isn't varied enough for the mileage. Lots of peaks of the lake, and then miles of blah. You have to forge the river too, so bring water shoes as the mossy rocks will surely cause an injury otherwise.

Nice trail with good views. Around the lake is about 16 miles with nice waterfalls around the half way point if you start by the dam. Make sure you plan ahead if you park at the day time use only lot, it closes at 5pm. Overall good hike with well maintained trails.

Beautiful...we only went about two miles along the southwest side. Bug central, bring spray!
