From Vancouver, east 55 miles on Highway 14 to the town of Carson. Turn north on Wind River Road and go 5 miles to Forest Service Road 65. Turn right and drive 17 miles to the trailhead on the right.

Super wet slog, possibly due to snow melt? Even so if you look at the map the trail intersects a lake around the 2 mile mark and there was no going forward without some kind Sorel, turned back.

It was about 80 degrees back in Vancouver on 9/2/2019 for this out and back hike. At the trail, I’d guess it was 10 degrees cooler. Perfect conditions. I started at Thomas Lake Trailhead and after reaching the Indian Heaven plateau, turned South to see Salahie Tyee and Blue Lake. It was a great hike and came in at just about 8 miles. That’s a long hike for me but once you get to the plateau area, it is flat and gorgeous. I must have seen nearly 2 dozen bodies of water (from lakes to tarns to small ponds) along the way. I applied DEET down in the parking lot but didn’t need it. No kidding. I ran into several parties returning from their overnight adventure and none complained of mosquitos. I was hiking on September 2nd and we’ve had a rather tame summer for the most part. I don’t know what affects mosquitoes but here at the start of September, they were not a problem - though I’d still want to have my bug spray close at hand. This isn’t a hike with sweeping views of distant peaks. But the lakes are beautiful and the meadows are idyllic. I didn’t see a single red huckleberry still on the bush. Plenty of black ones though. There were lots of mushrooms along the trail. Keep eyes pealed!

Mosquitos everywhere, even swarms of them at the Trail head that sent two fellas home after they got out of their vehicles. They said they got chowed last year and were trying again this year but even with all the protective clothing on, they left. I being stubborn, wanted to hike and check out Thomas Lake and scout various lakes out beyond. Made it to Thomas but due to vegetation management, they moved all the good camping spots way off the water so some were way out in the woods not even close to the lake. That was a bummer, the big bummer was if I stopped moving the mosquitos were biting non stop right thru my 98% deet spray. So, only stayed less than 3 hours and was getting bit even hiking out at a good clip. Will be back later, it was late June. Anyone have luck in early August?

Absolutely one of my favorite beginner backpacking trips. I like to take this trail all the way to blue lake just for added difficulty and scenery. If you’re looking to introduce a partner or reluctant family member to backpacking, this is it! However...mosquitoes!!!! I’d avoid it early and mid summer. Go in August/September

Hiked to Blue Lake. Pretty good climb for awhile. Thousands of wild blueberry plants with ripe fruit. Traveled 9/15 through 9/19. 2 rainy days but clear other days. Cold at night with some frost. No mosquitoes this time of year. Have to camp in designated areas, not much dry firewood

Absolutely beautiful trail! Many lakes along the way to wherever you’re headed with gorgeous meadows. My husband and were going to backpack in and stay the weekend but were eaten alive by mosquitos!! We stayed at the lake for about ten minutes and headed out. Guessing September may be the perfect time to come back. Bugs are out in full force mid July!

Still too much snow on the road to get to the trail head in my jeep

Trail in great condition- we camped farther in Junction Lake, going roundabout through Blue Lake onto PCT. Got chased out by the East Crater fire on Sunday Sept 4. There's actually a direct

If you come across a road closed sign, it just turned out to me a minor wash out. Any 4WD vehicle should have no problem getting through. The hike itself is nice and easy, lots of lakes and minimal elevation gain. We were a little early for huckleberries this year. Bugs were out but not in force. (Early Aug 2017)

Great easy hike. Lots of delicious huckleberries this year. The good news is that the washout from the spring 2016 on Rd 65 has been repaired.

A cluster of lakes is just up from the trailhead, but keep going up to vast meadows on the next level, where you'll find fewer people, and where the lakes are so numerous they don't all have names. In August and Sep, huckleberries are a big payoff. Don't gorge yourself of the bitter blue ones along the first part of the trail (Vaccinium ovatifolium). Save room for the sweeter purple-black huckleberries (Vaccinium membranaceum) that prevail further up. It's worth the hike all the way to stunning Blue Lake at the PCT junction. If you want to go a little further, check out Tombstone Lake, just a few hundred feet down the east side of the divide from the PCT. With all these tiny, still lakes, mosquito repellent is a must.

Great easy trail would take kids on the hike. The 6.6 miles is to Blue lake but there was to much snow at the top of the mountain in the end of June to make it to the lake. great for overnight camping.

Relatively simple trail in the Indian Heaven Wilderness. The camping area is currently under reconstruction/renovation. Seriously, anywhere in the Indian Heaven is paradise. You simply have to appreciate nature. All four of my kids and two of a friends had a blast. the youngest was four and oldest was 16. We got to this trailhead by traveling through Trout Lake, Washington and heading out on the NF roads. You can also access this by going through Carson, Washington.
