Brutal climb up from Waptus lake, we dropped camp at Waptus.

Hiked to Waptus lake the first day and was pleasantly surprised at the beautiful view on the south end of the lake. The hike was dry and dusty from all the horse traffic. Next morning left camp and hiked to Spade lake which took around three hours and I must say it’s one of the prettiest place I’ve been!! The hike to Spade is a strenuous up hill battle. Spent the night back at Waptus and out the next morning.

This was an amazing hike. I haven’t hiked in many years, but was able to make it to Spade Lake. As an amateur I would consider the hike difficult, but doable depending on your conditioning. I personally thought Waptus was a better prize than Spade, but the hike to Spade was breathtaking.

While the hike up to Spade lake from Waptus is difficult. The payoff of Spade lake is one that can’t be missed if you’re in the area.

The hike to Waptus lake isn't bad. The trail from Waptus to Spade is straight up the mountain. Roughly 5 miles. The only water is towards the end of the trail. Bring lots of water and snacks.
