Mostly shady with large old growth trees. View of the waterfall is obstrucked by vine maples. Hike up the east side of the Skookum creek for partial view of the waterfall. west side of the creek is a difficult rock scramble.

I biked this trail from the north trail head. The trail is fairly wide and clear but be prepared for lots of roots. You will need to carry your bike at one point to get over the rock scramble. It cannot be ridden no matter what your skill level may be! If staying at The Dalles campground take The Dalles River Trail as a shortcut to the forest road trail head. It will keep you off the highway.

An easy but beautiful hike. The old growth forest is beautiful with lots of huge fallen trees. The short climb to the falls is worth the little bit of a scramble. Would suggest to anyone looking for a mellow hike.

This is a very easy, well-maintained trail along the White River. There is very little elevation gain and it can be hiked for about 7.5 miles each direction which makes it perfect for all skill levels. The trail sees a lot of bike traffic so hikers need to be aware of riders on the trail. We hiked about 3.5 miles in and enjoyed some time at the river before we turned back so we could make the tenth of a mile climb to the falls. The way up is a steep scramble but is worth every step in order to sit next to the towering Skookum Falls. As it was late June when we hiked this trail, there was still a lot of water flow at the Falls. A return trip in late August might see considerably less. Overall, this was a fun but short and level hike that was a perfect addition to our camping weekend at the Silver Springs Campground 12 minutes away.

So there are multiple trailheads that say Skookum Flats, we found this out driving around. I don't actually remember which one we did. But the hike we did was actually pretty easy, maybe a couple miles to the falls, and fairly flat. Reaching the actual falls, to get to the top was a scramble, but if you're in shape you can do it no problem. There were a couple mosquitoes on the way but didn't have to break out the bug spray. There were some nice views of the river on the way too.

Father's Day hike with the kiddos and our small dog. Easy hike with a couple of small climbs, pretty views of the White River, and not crowded at all. We attempted the steep climb up to the falls but husband's bum knee and my anxiety about having to get back down meant we got about halfway and turned back. Still a beautiful hike, would do it again.

Great trail. I would go in the early spring so that all the leaves aren’t obscuring the falls. Either way it’s a beautiful walk for any skill level.

Very easy and peaceful (weekday) 2.3 mile hike in, but, if you want to see the falls it’s 200’ straight up at the Falls sign (no switchbacks, straight up grabbing roots, rocks etc). It was fun but unexpected. Would do it again to take a break from driving.

We parked at both ends and went 6 miles plus up to the base of the falls. Super-fun.

The flowers in bloom right now are beautiful! The trail was easy, but the climb to the falls was a little sketchy. Short, but steep. Wear the right shoes and watch where you step.

Easy, beautiful hike thru old growth forest to a pretty stunning waterfall. Lots of snowmelt at this time so it may not be so spectacular when it’s drier out. Seems like there’s enough traffic now to deter big cats during the day, for those who read the previous review from about a month ago. I did see some possible tracks but they could’ve been big dogs. Spotted a woodpecker and several wrens. Skunk cabbage is just starting to appear. Lots of ancient trees and pretty views of the river and mountains.

beautiful as always...but still tons of snow. Parking lot is not usable do to snow plow... See pictures. There's enough space for a couple cars on the side of the road by the trail entrance. Micro spikes are absolutely necessary and a lot of places we were falling through this now. hiked this one alone today and saw too many cat tracks to feel safe continuing so I didn't get to see the Falls but I hear that it is frozen!

If you want something challenging, don't do this one. Mostly flat and easy. More like a walk in the woods than a hike. Unless you take the side trail up to the falls. Which, in late summer is more of a dribble than a waterfall. Still really cool and worth the trip up. The rock wall is covered in moss and really cool. We went midday and it wasn't crowded at all. Only saw one other couple on the trail going. Three small groups of mountain bikers passed by. Overall, a really good one to do if you just want to get some wiggles out. Flat and easy enough for kids if you don't go up to the falls (seriously... it's steep!). It was a warm day, but being by the river and mostly shaded, it was perfect!

Lots of families on this Fathers Day. Very flat as indicated & exposed somewhat. Go early to avoid the burning rays. The falls do have a trail but we only attempted did not go all the way as we had a Sr doggy with us & didn’t’ feel safe. We drove down 410 on the way out & took a look at the actual falls from a distance

Pretty flat trail for the most part. Trail features 2 waterfalls which is nice, walk along some rushing water during some of the hike. Wish you could get closer to the falls, we tried but could only see from a little bit of a distance. Would do this hike again.

We just moved to Washington, and our home goods are still being shipped here so we chose an easier trail that didn’t require much beyond our tennis shoes and workout clothes. We got there at around 9:30, and it was very quiet. There was an increase in hikers when we were almost back to the parking lot, and there was very little parking there at about 11:30. I would definitely recommend this to someone who wants to get out and do a hike that won’t take up your whole day. The falls were gorgeous, but I wouldn’t recommend the last scramble to families with little ones or anyone who can’t do a steep climb on rocks. However, the whole trail until then was so beautiful and I loved the river views and clear forest streams. Don’t let rain or an early rise stop you from getting out!

Loved it. Worth the effort to climb the rock scramble to see the waterfall.

parked at the Buck Creek trail head. NW Forest Pass required. Trailhead clearly marked however it leads to you Ranger Creek Airstrip and then there's no direction. Turn right and walk down the road until you see a sign that says trail for hiking and biking. Snow and ice still on trail. we used microspikes no problem. Trail has recently been cleared of downed trees. if you don't want to climb (where the sign says falls) just go over the bridge and you can get a great view. next time I would take two cars and leave one at each end. beautiful trail.

Very icy. Very very icy. We ran into hikers on there way down and they informed us it was icy all the way up. We kept moving forward but we came to a point where it was just constant ice, we weren’t getting much traction and we weren’t getting very far... so we sadly turned back. We’ll try again in a couple of weeks. It has great potential but the ice was out of control.

This was an amazing hike ! Had a little bit of everything you would want to see ... views of the river were so peaceful and the true reward was the falls

This is a perfect trail to get out on with family as it is an easier hike if you don't do the rock scramble! We went in January and there was a light dusting of snow and the falls were still flowing and looked quite magical. Lots of downed trees but trail is well maintained and most have been cleared from the trail. There are several small bridges to cross as well, the view of falls is through the low brush but you can rock scramble closer for better views. Trail head parking was clear but in the past few weeks it had been icy so be prepared with your vehicles in Winter.

this hike was kind of flat in some area. The falls were gorgeous to climb to.

The trail is in great shape, and it's not that steep. It is also accessible during the winter. The doggie and I thoroughly enjoyed the hike.

Great day for the trail. there ares a couple missing signs but just stay right when the trail split at about the 3 mile mark. The falls where going strong. Only a couple of other people out on the trail.

We didn't make it to the Falls. The trails were poorly marked. A few spray painted arrows on the ground. We stayed to the left with the many trails along the way, crossed a small bridge, which then brought us to the river. It was a spectacular view with a small beach.

Beautiful hike. Pass is required. Pretty easy hike. Except the last bit of it is 300 ft straight up. Pretty difficult actually. Nice view. The falls on were really tall and a bit more than a trickle. It's been so dry out. The hike was along a river with lots of trees. Watch out for mountain bikers.

Nice hike! Although there isn't a a lot of elevation gain until the falls, there is still beautiful scenery all around to enjoy. The scramble to the falls at the end was a challenge, but exciting for us and our 11 and 13-year old sons. Trailhead is across the street.
