Sand Dune Interpretive Trail is a 1 mile moderately trafficked loop trail located near Oak Harbor, Washington that offers the chance to see wildlife and is good for all skill levels. The trail is primarily used for hiking, walking, and nature trips. Dogs are also able to use this trail but must be kept on leash.
The Discover Pass is required for vehicular entrance to this park. An Annual Pass costs $30 and a Day Pass is $10. A nice walk during the off-season. Great scenery and limited elevation change. Much of this path is wheelchair accessible due to paved paths. The coastal dune area is somewhat unique in the Pacific Northwest and a special treat. Accessibility: As of September 2020 the trail may not be wheelchair and handicapped accessible as the asphalt pavement is cracked and damaged. Please use caution if attempting to navigate this trail with mobility equipment such as a wheelchair or stroller. This trail is estimated to range in slope from 0-7% and 3.5-6 feet in width. While most of the trail is flat to gentle in slope, there is estimated to be two moderately steep sections between the 0.3 and 0.5 mile mark. Most of the trail is paved with asphalt or packed with gravel, the section descending to the beach may be not as stable or wide. The pavement may be damaged or cracked due to use and erosion. There are ADA-compliant car parking spots with access aisles at the trailhead.
Deception Pass State Park has got to be one of my all-time favorite places visit year 'round. The bridge itself offers gorgeous views of Fidalgo Island and the vast ocean front. This would be the first time I actually stopped and hiked down to the sand dunes and other areas of the park. The beach front doesn't offer much except peace of mind and beautiful views of the ocean. You're surrounded by high mountainous rock, alpine forest and many varieties of sea birds and various other wildlife. This is a great place to come to and relax, reflect on life and just enjoy your time outdoors. During low tide there are tide pools in the rocks and you can observe sea life if you're lucky. I absolutely love it down here and encourage anyone to hike down to the ocean front if you're coming to see the bridge. Stay safe!
