A fun hike done on July 7, surrounded by snow. Many marmots whistling at us. Be sure to take sunglasses. It was quite foggy and no one else on the trail. The snow was melting each day so following it across the snowfields was challenging. We hiked to rock outcroppings a couple times to pick it up again. Another memorable hike.

WoW! Great trail. Start early (8.00) and you will be almost alone there. Great views on mountains. Sometimes on higher part of the trail some snow. No problem to cross. Sometimes muddy. Avoid the crowds and walk to the glacier. You will love this trail!

Took the Fourth Crossing trail up to the Skyline trail, and from there took Skyline to the Paradise Glacier trail. Saw a bird but no one else on the Fourth Crossing trail, a nice change from the usual Paradise summer crowds. The Skyline trail was moderately trafficked, and we ran into a volunteer ranger heading in each direction. There’s a family of marmots with a couple babies at the monument just before the Paradise Glacier trail. The volcanic Glacier trail only had a few other people on it, and it makes a notable change from the usual Paradise scenery. It was a cloudy day with a rainstorm blowing in, so we only stayed at the end of trail marker long enough to have a snack. We only saw Mt Adams for a bit, but I’m sure you could see much more on a clear day. I’d recommend a wind breaker and trek poles for this one.

Snow shoes & route finding needed, shortly after breaking away from the Skyline trail. Well worth the effort & braving the whordes at Paradise. Once in the moraine, don’t forget to look to the south, for views if Mt St Helens & Adams!

Spectacular day on Mt. Rainier. The road up to Paradise was icy in spots but not enough to need chains. Lots of people for a week day, parking lot 3/4 full when I arrived and continuing to fill. I decided to hike the Skyline trail counter-clockwise so headed down the road and up to Mazama Ridge via the 4th Crossing trail. Met only two other groups of snowshoers and wondered where all the people went when I saw how many little black dots were on the Muir snowfield. Looked like a line of little black ants. Near the junction to Paradise Glacier I ran into a couple who suggested avoiding the trail on up to Panorama Point because of the copious cornices. Sounded like sound advice so I headed on up the Paradise Glacier trail, turning around just past where the end of the maintained trail would be if you could see it. Gorgeous views in every direction. Sun, sun, sun! Don't forget sunscreen and sunglasses!
