The Trail to North Lake begins off the trail to Independence Lake. The trail continues up the hillside in a steep climb, when you reach the first ridge continue east until you reach a second ridge with views of Glacier Peak, with North Lake lying in a basin 700 hundred feet below.

love this was work after independence lake but well worth it. didnt quite make it to north lake but so near it. 2 night trip. first night spent a few hundred feet from north lake quiet cold but beautiful night with clear sky in early september. perfect to night sky of the milky way shooting stars satellites only thing it was cold. second night caught fish at independence lake for a good dinner and hung out by the campfire telling stories and playing camp games. we had plenty of first time backpackers on the trip and it was a pretty hard trek with full packs but the scenery was way worth it. next time we will make it to north lake, heard the fishing is epic. independence lake has group camp sites but north lake is very limited

Great hike, 25 degrees with clear blue sky, saw one other person the entire walk. So this trail really has nothing to do with Coal Lake except you are Coal Lake Rd and drive past Coal Lake. Coal Lake is like 200 ft from the parking area. Drive past this trail to the end of the road, this is the trailhead for Independence Lake and North Lake. The mile walk up to Independence is a real nice warmup. When you get to the far end of this pretty little lake just follow trail, up. When you get to the top you will sort of follow the hill around to the right then start down towards North Lake. This part of the trail is the one shovel wide type and is steep and slick.

Road to North Lake trail is not too bad. Low clearance vehicles can do it, but have to go slow in a few spots. Trail from Independence Lake to North is steep, rocky, and lots of tree roots. Slower going than trail to Independence. Follow cairns around rock fall near the saddle at the top above North Lake.

The road up to coal lake was a big sketch. Deep pot holes, trees down in road - can still make it around, steep mountain road.. Not for the faint of heart (me)! Only made it to Coal Lake. Short 3 min walk from parking lot. Beautiful lake with trout.. Nice and peaceful.

Hike this trail today. Kicked our butts. Would love to know the elevation gain. It was pretty good until we got about half way and then there were some icy spots. Up at the top towards the second ridge it was deep snow. There was no trail you just follow someone else's steps up to the top ridge where you can look down on North Lake. Didn't look like anyone hiked down the lake. I uploaded some pictures from the hike today.

Be warned, the trailhead is inaccessible. There is atleast one patch of snow blocking the road that is 18" or so deep and 100yd long. My ford ranger 4.0l couldn't get through. It should be cleared in a few weeks. I'll try again in a month. Good luck

The fog lifted just in time as we approached the second ridge. Glacier Peak in the distance and North Lake lying in a basin 700 hundred feet below was so beautiful. There is so much more to explore.

The hike wasn't difficult and the lake was clear with an attractive mountain backdrop. This is a great place to hike to eat lunch or just relax by the a lake.
