BackpackingGreat!

Trail is in excellent shape. Some encroaching twigs here and there but not too bad. It’s mostly shaded and definitely a climb. The last 1/2 is out in the open so you want to make sure you’re up there before the afternoon heat. Awesome views from the top.

Arrived at parking lot 1230. The first .75 miles on the Wonderland Trail are quite easy with some minor elevation changes. The trail becomes steeper in sections for the next .75. When you connect with the Van Trump, the elevation gains are more intense, particularly in some areas. There are a few switchbacks as you ascend toward Cougar Peak (?). The trail is very easy to follow with signs at most intersections. The path along the creek leading to Mildred Point Trail is crowded by flora in some sections. Also quite narrow in spots, watch your footing. The wildflowers here are amazing. Saw many similar ones on Kautz Creek trail last week, but not the sheer numbers. Instead of doing Mildred Point, I circles around to Comet Falls. This waterfall is amazing, crashing onto some boulders at the bottom. If you want a heavier workout, take this path. It adds mileage, but is more remote and less traveled. If you enjoy the solitude of nature, this is a better way. I meet 5 people total on Van Trump Trail. After Comet Falls, I went through Van Trump Park to remain on what I assume is still Van Trump Trail. This will lead you to Rainier if you stay on it. Camp Hazard is along this route. I stopped at the first plateau. You can see 3 waterfalls on Rainier and a good view of Mt. Saint Hellens. The wildflowers here were plentiful and amazing. I encountered one person when past Van Trump Park. Reached an elevation of 6200'. If you want to see the route, look at Scott Goode's recording for Comet Falls. Wonderful day. Enjoy your travels.

I did not hike this trail but trying to spread awareness for anyone who is planning to. There is a MISSING PERSON who was last seen on the afternoon of Friday 6/19/20 on Van Trump Trail heading towards Mildred Point. Please, if you are in this area, keep your eyes peeled. He is a 24 year old male and appeared to be hiking alone. You can find more information on the Facebook page “Find Vincent Djie”. Thank you for reading and please keep him and his family in your thoughts.

Long, mostly shaded trail. Went to get an extra set of eyes looking for the missing hiker, Vincent Djie. I was glad to see 2 groups out searching for him. Challenging trail at times just bc of length and elevation mostly but but it was well kept. The wildflowers on the last 1/3 were beautiful. Great view of Rainier at the point.

Hiked to Comet Falls and then on to Mildred Point....wow! It was challenging, not too crowded, good mix sun/shade. My first time up that high...I’ll be back.

Beautiful trail and very scenic entire time. We hiked past the maintained trail line and to Mildred point. Beautiful views of the waterfalls coming off Rainier. Also had great photos of Mt St Helens. Trail was steep and had to use tree roots to help a few times because it was muddy. Beautiful snow at top. Enjoyed thoroughly and recommend. It did take us about 5.5 hours but we had picnic at top for half hour.

I did this hike in early September of 2017. This hike is hard!!!!! No snow when we went up, we did run into a bear eating blueberries. Had to use roots to pull our way up on some spots and the sand is incredibly hard to climb up. But the views at the top are absolutely amazing and snacking on blueberries on the way down was pretty cool also.

HikingMuddySnow

I did this hike in September of 2017. There was snow starting past comet falls on the ascent to Van Trump Park and most of the way up to Mildred Pt. We had the trail all to ourselves after Van Trump. It was tough in the snow (had to grab on to trees for better bracing), but the views of Rainier at the top are breathtaking - well worth the effort. Coming down was fun in the snow - glissaded down some portions.

We did this on Thursday and there is still quite a bit of snow. You catch glimpses of the trail regularly so it’s not too tough to navigate. Definitely worth it, amazing views of Rainier once you hit the top. Able to view at least 6 falls coming off the glaciers.
