Hiking

Nice nature hike, however there’s a lot of different trails so it’s quite easy to get off track. Pretty much all of them end up at the top regardless. Lots of wild berries and flowers so now is a good time to go. Views on the way were decent, but once you get to the Radar Dome it’s pretty average at best. Lots of bear scat so keep that in mind. This is a one and done trail, nothing really exciting to keep going back for unless you’re mountain biking, tons of new tracks all over.

Since we went early in the morning (7am start) and cloud coverage was good the hike was pleasant, not crowded, and not too buggy. Make sure to download a map cause there’s a lot of trails and minimal signage . Definitely wear big spray and sun block cause this hike took us 3.5 hrs up and about 1 to 1.5 down. I recommend shoes with traction too :) Go for the exercise, enjoy the views en route cause the peak doesn’t have much to show.

Great hike. Definitely challenged my skill level! Next time I will bring bug spray or something. I had an epic battle with a huge black fly that kept biting me through my clothes while I was flailing my backpack and trekking poles around.

Horseback riding

Great for horseback riding, walking and mountain biking. No motorized vehicles. Looks like they added a downhill bike track. Very beautiful and very scenic.

Decent hike probably would be better on a mountain bike to be honest. the trail system criss crosses so take note before hand which route you desire. trails are quite wide as well for the most part. I did see a bear near the upper trails of saltese creek. This was Tuesday 6/23. Pretty small but didn't see the mom. let it pass the trail waited ten and went on my way.

Hiking

Trails are generally pretty wide (since a fair amount are access roads). Turns are not marked well, but is you follow an AllTrails map, it makes it pretty easy. I must be kind of a hiking snob because I think the views are mediocre on this trail. There were 2 or 3 spots that had some minimally obstructed views, but definitely not as picturesque as some other spokane hikes. At the radar dome at the top, there was no view (which was a bit disappointing because there is real potential there if you could see over the tree line). Probably a 1 and done for me.

Read the way-points tips before you go! There are a couple turns that are easy to miss. Great views the whole way!

Running

Beautiful scene! A few patches of snow in the shade up top, not much mud at all. Lots of bikers at the parking lot, but none on this route. Not well-marked. This route seems to be the most direct to the top, as all the little jaunts seem to eventually connect to the main logging/maintenance road(s). There are three critical turns that must be made: at about 2 miles, there is a sharp left off the main trail (with a few cairns to mark it). About 3 minutes (of running) ahead, there is another turn to the right. Both of these are ridiculously steep... I had to stop running & walk for the second one. There is one more turn closer to the top, not sure how far up... maybe around mile 3.75. This jaunt might be the steepest! It connects to the main road, and from there you're almost to the top.

Did this portion on a cool, rainy morning. Saw two coyotes, lots of animal tracks. Didn’t make it to the top. Will be back to complete it.

There’s not much snow left. However, there is one area where you have to go uphill in the snow and ice. I recommend the other trail you can take. It’ll be to your right and connect you to the road that leads to the peak rather than going around like the trail suggests. It’s really narrow, but much less of a chance slipping especially on the way down. Beautiful views. Not too muddy.

I took the California creek trail in and there were no signs to point the way. Great section along the creek but make sure to stick closely to the map or it can be easy to get off trail. The hike to the view point was much more of a climb over sleep terrain. 0.4 miles of 45 degree slope and 3 downed trees. Definitely worth the view though. Past the view point expect to still see snow at 4000 ft. Over all great hike though.

Great trip up to the dome today. Blue skies and great views. A little post holing in the snow but I expect it will be melted out in a couple weeks tops. Cougar tracks and plenty of deer and elk marks, possible moose tracks as well.
