Lots of mosquitoes at the trail head so bring your spray! We did this hike with our two daughters and hiked half way. First part was fairly easy for them but the incline was a little more work. They did great considering their ages. Lots of places to camp too!

Nice secluded hike. As most do, we hiked only the portion out to the falls and back and did not continue to American Ridge, though I did read that a WTA work party finished there just after our visit, so it might be worth checking out. Early on in the trail, there is a confusing junction where trails run to the north and south. Continue straight till you see a post on your left. After that, you'll cross a small bridge and then come to the American River, which has to be crossed either by log balancing or wading. The wade will put you in above your waist despite appearing shallow. The log balance can also be treacherous. That's really the only difficult spot though. After the river, the hike to the falls is nice and mild.

Great hike but be warned there's tons of mosquitos-just bring bug spray and you'll be fine. The waterfall and view of Mt. Rainer was well worth the hike which was flat until you reached the incline to the waterfall (maybe a mile of moderate climb). Once at the American River you can 1) forge through the river ( max 4' deep) or follow the river down about 100 yards to cross the at a log jam. Our dog did this great!

Great trail with wonderful views, the first 30 minutes is covered with downfalls and several times you have to leave the trail to make it around, but once you get past the down falls it is a great trail with spectacular views all the way.
