This was a great hike and a great trail. I think it is rated as hard due to the distance. We did the counter clockwise loop. I thought the views of Spirit Lake and MSH were better on the first few miles of the hike after the beginning of the trailhead. There were a few spots which were challenging but not dangerous on the least. If you can talk yourself into doing this hike when you get to the trailhead, I’d say “Go for it”!

Spectacular hike! Starting just before noon, we did the loop in a counterclockwise direction to keep the option of larger loop (adding in Windy Ridge and Plains of Abraham Loop which would make the total about 13 miles and add a few hundred feet of vertical). The first 2 miles or so is along a dirt road. With no need to worry about footing, we could take in the great views of Mt. St Helens, Mt. Adams and surroundings. From this side, the views are right up into the MSH crater almost from the beginning despite the moderate elevation. As we approached the first trail intersection, we watched some mountain bikers pick their way down the ridge next to steps on the loop just to the south. At the end of the road, we took trail to right and descended gradually down toward Spirit Lake. The first stream crossing had a thicket which encroached on the trail a bit, but was easy to get through (may be the only shade you get on the trip). The trail was not so obvious at the 2nd stream crossing, but large cairns, mark the turns (first right and then left across stream and up the opposite bank). From shortly beyond this point (3.5 miles in), a trail takes off for Johnston Observatory and Coldwater peak, but we turned left and started steady climb, with Loowit Falls in view most of the time. It' less than a mile to the Loowit trail, with right turn for loop around mountain and left turn toward the falls. After about the same distance, the falls spur takes off. The sign says 1/4 mile, but it seemed like at least 1/2 mile until the trail petered out at edge of gorge exiting base of falls. You can scramble a little higher, but the view doesn't improve. On the high road back there were a few spots where the trail was narrow and slippery with loose rock, but no major problems. We saw two large groups of mountain goats (about 20 in each, including many youngsters), the first near where spur trail took off and the second above intersection with southern loop. We decided we'd had enough, so we descended back toward Windy Ridge and along road. We got back to the car a little before 5pm, so the loop took us about 5 h including stop for lunch, a snack at the falls, watching the goats and lots of time gazing and photgraphing the awesome scenery.

6/28: What a fun trail! Big rocks and sandy scree to scramble on. Tons of small ravines, mossy hills and traversing streams to dart through. The elevation gain is minimal so you can focus on engaging with the varied terrain. Today was misty and rainy making the wide, blast-zone plain feel like a Scottish Moore.

Great trail that gives you great views of the plains and a waterfall. If your observant you may even see some wildlife (mountain goats, chipmunks, quail).
