Started from the Wynoochee side on 5/29/20. Trail was in much better condition than anticipated. It was a really nice trail all the way through and only basic route finding skills are needed. We were stopped just under a half mile from the lake because of too much snow. There was a creek that was flowing under the snow cover so we figured it wasn’t worth the risk to try and cross. All of the stream/river crossings were very manageable even in late May. Be prepared to climb over 20-30 downed trees throughout the trail. If you’re looking to make all the way to the lake without hiking through any snow you’ll probably have to wait until early to mid July as there was still 6-7’ on the trail as we were approaching the lake before turning around. Overall a really beautiful day trip though. AllTrails is incorrect in the distance, round trip to the lake would come in closer to 14-15 total miles.

Very beautiful but difficult. I came in from the South Fork Skok Trailhead. It’s about 8 miles in one way. The trail is pretty overgrown in places and there are a lot of big trees down in the trail. The trail is difficult to follow at time and disappears frequently after the second river crossing. The bridge at the second crossing is out and you have to ford the river. The last mile and a half is straight up and there is still snow on the other side of Sundown pass but it is passable without much difficulty. There are fish in the lake but they were very reluctant to bite any fly I threw at them, didn’t see any over 10 inches

It was a great hike and we had a good time didn't make the lake because the forge was too deep and the water was very cold and running pretty fast for a safe crossing. We plan on going back later in the year when the water is down the weather is warmer The trail was ok but definitely primitive

Last three miles are haRd up. There is a nice valley with two ponds, these are not the lake, made that mistake the first trip up. Only a half mile past them and your there. Haven't tried fishing too many salamanders. Next time its a must
