Lake Twentytwo Trail is a beautiful hike to an alpine lake through old growth forests ending with stunning mountain views of Mount Pilchuck. The trail can be accessed off of Mountain Loop Highway in the North Cascades area of Washington State. The path starts out gently enough on a dirt staircase through rainforest. You will hear water trickling from twentytwo creek through the forest in several locations along the way. A bridge crosses the creek around a mile in where there is a particularly pretty waterfall. Here the trail gets steeper, with more rocks and some creek crossings. Gentle but persistent switchbacks lead to a long talus slope with the wall of Lake Twentytwo looming above, seemingly insurmountable. The talus is a jumble of sharp rock, but navigable. The trail switches back and heads toward the large stream which outlets from the lake where it finally flattens out. A bit further down the trail is you will encounter lake itself, a turquoise lake with an the enormous steep wall of Mount Pilchuck behind it. A path goes around the entire lake and it is worth the time it takes to do this extra loop trail. The trail is rocky, so sturdy hiking shoes or boots are necessary. Since there are creek crossings, waterproof hiking boots are recommended. This is a great hike, however it is very popular and can be crowded on weekends. It is best to get there early as parking fills up quickly.

This trail is incredible! The view of the lake and the mountain behind it was so much more beautiful than I anticipated! The hike up is pretty easy and fairly short for a seasoned hiker, while some other hikers seem to be a little more challenged, so I think moderate difficulty is a reasonable rating. Still, it really isn’t all that far to the lake. The trail itself is rocky pretty much the whole way, but could be worse. There were lots of other hikers, but the trail didn’t feel crowded and there was always space to pass. There was a lot of snow at the lake, but some people seemed to have hike all the way around without a problem. One of my new favorite hikes!

Did 5/16. Some packed snow at the end of the trail but easy to cross over. The path around the lake is still covered in snow. Beautiful view.

Probably my favorite trail I’ve been on in Wa... The scenery changes every mile, absolutely breathtaking! Wear good shoes because it’s a little muddy and you cross a few small “creeks”.... people with tennis shoes were all over the place during the incline because it’s so rocky. the view at the end was worth every step!

We went on a super rainy day so it was extremely muddy! However, it was so beautiful and IMO totally worth it. At the top, there was so much snow so we couldn’t get all the way around but otherwise the view was absolutely worth it and very different! Loved it. I want to go again when it’s not covered in snow to see how it looks without the snow as well! Side note: PLEASE keep your trash with you and take it out. The trashes are over flowing, and bathrooms/ trash cans are not being maintained. Come prepared and be courteous!

Went 5/26/20 and it is open! Absolutely loved this hike! Best one in Wa that I’ve been on so far. Hike was so fun and fun for families but it is all uphill and rocky so you just need to be VERY cautious and careful. Wear good shoes, because the whole trail is wet! The parking lot does have a sign that a forest park pass required but I didn’t have one and I was fine! Do it, so worth the drive and the trek up!

A very beautiful, moderate hike for the experienced hikers! Definitely wear waterproof hiking boots as you have to walk through many streams and snow up at the top. While enjoying our lunch at the lake we got to hear an avalanche that came from the other side. Very busy so definitely plan on getting there early. Facilities at the bottom need attention. Bring your on T.P. Just in case.

EXTREMELY rocky. Literally... the entire ENTIRE trail is rocks. And not flat, easy to walk on rocks. Like, jagged, pokey rocks. And with the snow melting, the entire thing was basically hiking in a shallow creek. Proper footwear is a MUST. I thought I could manage with just Nike running sneakers. BAD choice. Big mistake. I fell 3 times on the way down. The rocks and roots sticking up are all wet and slippery. And my shoes had no grip or ankle support. It was... rough. Quite rough. BUT. I’d still do it again. Bc the endpoint was worth it. The view of the lake with the mountains was absolutely stunning. And with the snow, it gave it beautiful contrast. So so beautiful. Worth it. Just know you’ll be walkin on rocks and wetness, bring the right shoes, and it’ll be fine.

We got here around 10:30 in the morning and it was surprisingly busy, considering the rainy weather. It was a great trail, the incline was pretty gradual. The trail gets real rocky after about 1.5 miles. Once you get there, the views are beautiful.
