Great small hike for some views of the Palouse. Take the primitive trail for a longer hike.

Really good hike, variety of terrain, and beautiful views.

The hike to the summit and back is actually 2.5 miles. If you continue on the primitive trail you will reach about 4.75 miles. There is another loop that's 3.5 miles. Great hike!

The ridge offers 360 degree views of the Palouse and depending on the time of year you visit, the colors will shift, fade and brighten. The dry side of the butte is your typical desert...which means sun in your face and a chance to pretend it's springtime in the dead of winter. The north side of the butte has been taken over by lush forests...which means the wildlife is abundant as well.

The first 1.5 miles take you up to the ridgeThe trail is wide and the switchbacks are easily manageable.. From here you reach that view. And you can meander the ridge about .5 miles to take in every angle.

I managed to wander off the trail as per usual, so my hike ended up being closer to 4.5 miles, but finding a rock to sit on in the blinding sun while the pup ran through the tall grass made it worth it. I highly recommend staying for the sunset as well - just don't forget the park closes at dusk, so your hike down needs to be a bit speedy. You can return the way you came or take the back loop down to the campground.

Took two middle school boys on the full loop hike and it was awesome! The views of the fields this time of year are breathtaking. The hike was super easy. It says moderate but we barely broke a sweat. The trail is really well maintained but a little dusty in places so keep that in mind when you pick your hiking shoes. Also, be mindful of the rocks that are sticking out of the ground. They are perfect to catch a toe on and down you go.

has a little bit of everything, including an alternate rustic path up to the summit. great views of the Palouse landscape. the bedrock is quartzite--metamorphosed sandstone....sand from an ancient shoreline. pine trees and prairie flora. would recommend!

Gorgeous views! Being a Colorado native I can be a bit of a hiking snob, but this was a wonderful hike. Not too difficult, but enough to feel like you get a work out and get your blood pumping with various options to shorten or lengthen depending on how much time your able to commit. There’s also a cute little park for the littles that my 1 and 3 yr old boys loved. Absolutely stunning views- this will be a frequent repeat!

Great as a sunset hike! Bring a headlamp to get back down. The rangers usually close the gates at full dark

Frat boys and sorority girls, welcome. This hike is definitely the right hike for you. Its not hard but just hard enough to call it a hike. You can make a fire Instagram post showing the world you actually do things other then drink and be frat. For everyone else, this hike is pretty meh. Its a great place to bring the kids and get outside, but it you're looking for a challenge or something to hike for, this hike isn't for you.

January hike on a sunny day. Icy trail on the north side in the shade. Enjoyed powering uphill wherever possible. Poles definitely came in handy.

An interesting piece of topography where a quartzite steptoe summits 650 feet over approximately a 3-mile ascent and return to the parking lot. Views to the south were excellent extending beyond Moscow and Pullman to the Wallowa range 100 miles off in the distance. It was a sunny afternoon with perfect temps in the 60's. So pretty well traversed with hikers from the area. Highly recommended for families with smaller children. Would rate this easier than moderate. Get yourself a backrest against an outcropping of granite and enjoy the view.

Nice trail. I did the side trail that added 3 miles and went on private property. No dogs allowed on that section. Would make a great lunch hike.

Great area for the family to get outside. Walking the trail counter clockwise allows a steep 1.4 mile ascent with more gradual downhill for the return.

Shade is plentiful at the start and end but on top very little. Little ones will need sunscreen.

Very busy trail today, but still quiet enough.

The primitive trail says not for dogs.

Have done this many, many times. I especially enjoy going farther to the very top, then along the ridge, and the longer way down, a little more than 5 miles. Nice, shady park and picnic area is a great place to go mid-summer. Wildflowers are fantastic in mid-April.

Great views, trail is in very good condition. Excellent hike. It is 3.5 miles though not 2.4.
