Hiked in on 21 September to climb up the ridge with Johnson peak and then checkout hart lake. A few weeks ago I hiked in about 4 miles and returned. It was overcast and lots of smoke from the forest fires. Started at the crack of dawn as I planned on spending the day wandering. Nothing spectacular about the first few miles but once you get above Packwood Lake the views are awesome. About 5 miles in I split from the trail and headed up the ridge above the trail. Steep climb and a few tricky spots but the views were well worth it. Could see Mt Adams, Mt hood, St Hellens and Rainier. Came across two groups of mountain goats. Sure wished I could maneuver across the steep slopes and rocks as they could. By the time I made it down to lilly basin trail meets angry mountain trail I was pretty tired. I got a good view of hart lake and figured I save it for another trip. I’ll hike in from the angry mountain trail head next time.
