Gorgeous view of mt. Rainier on a clear day. Not too busy. Nice wide trail in the beginning. Steady ascend (good when going up but my knees hurt coming down).

Bit rainy this morning, not a down pore, but misty and little drizzle. Still great hiking and weather helps keep you cool.

If you’re looking for a destinations you’ll want to type in Mason Lake via Ira Springs memorial Trail or head to Bandera via Ira Springs Trail.

This is the 3rd week in a row I've hiked this. The trail takes you up the Ira Spring trail to Mason Lake, then up to Mt. Defiance. I believe the map route shows this using the old Mason Lake trail which is no longer maintained, steeper, but is doable. Bugs at the top, and lake, but tis the season. Wildflowers are still blooming but I think the peak bloom was the last two weeks. 10.8 miles is what AllTrails recorded. Great to take a swim in Mason Lake after the hike up to the summit of Mt Defiance and back.

This was an absolutely gorgeous hike! We kept going to Mason Lake and then up to Mount Defiance. The trail wasn't too crowded when we were there at 8 am, but the parking lot was already full. If you see cars parked on the side of the road on your way up, join them to avoid an awkward U-turn. You will need a NW Forest pass. A steep hike, on the more difficult side of moderate. Some bees harassed me but nothing too crazy.

Loved the trail. Went on a Saturday morning and by 8am the parking lot was full. The wild flowers were very beautiful, the views seem breathtaking as well but it was a cloudy day so didn’t experience the great views.

Mount Bandera was an amazing site. Loved the view, a little bit of a climb but it is all worth it. It feels like heaven up there. The hike up took us 2 hours, it was an easy trail except the last part if you’re going to Bandera.

6/29 This is an absolutely stunning hike! It has it all; mountain vistas, wild flowers, boulders and scramble, and an alpine lake. Tip: This is a VERY popular trail. Suggest getting to trailhead no later than 8am. We arrived at 9am, and had to walk a long ways down due to no parking. Also, Park Rangers are out in full force giving tickets. Make sure to have your Northwest Pass. This hike is HARD, not a “Moderate” hike. It has one stretch that is a butt kicker, and continues up, up, up. It’s not easy! Once you arrive at the lake, there isn’t really much area to sit around it. We scrambled over boulders on what wasn’t even a trail to get to them to try to find a nice rock to sit on for lunch. I jumped in the water - it was amazing! Beautiful hike - steep and hard!

Great trail with soma amazing views! Wildflowers are out and so was the mountain. Highly recommend this trek! The lake with the mountains behind it was so serene you just want to bring a book and post it up and relax for a while. Enjoy!

The trail was in great condition, better than my legs! This is a challenging but rewarding hike. The views were perfect with very prominent and clear shots of McClelland Butte, Mount Kent and Duke of Kent peaks at the beginning part of the hike and when the trail splits to Bandera vs. Mason Lake, Mount Rainier becomes the main attraction! The trail steepens considerably at this point and feels a lot more like Mailbox Peak. The beargrass is now out, along with pink heather, creating great photo opportunities. This is one of my favorite Hikes. The route to the real summit beyond Little Bandera requires some route finding. I was surprised that there was still a snow filed to cross on the backside of the ridge. There are options to hike along the I-90 side of the ridge which I did on the return or the backside which I did on the ascent. The summit offers wonderful views of Mason Lake, Mount Defiance, Webb Mountain, Mount Rainier, Mount Roosevelt, Kaleetan Peak, Chair Peak and Chimney Rock along with a number of less prominent peaks. Don’t forget to sign the summit register on top! There are not a lot of entries!!

This is a great conditioning hike for runners, or a beautiful day hike. It’s absolutely stunning, and easy to get to. The access road leading to the trail is pretty smooth, it is just important to be mindful with overflow parking since this lot seems to fill up fast.

Hiked it yesterday, 6/1. Arrived around 8:30 and had to park down the road. Highly recommend! Well maintained. Great vistas. Good balance of shade and open areas. Two trail options at the top-Mason Lake and Bandera Mountain Summit. Our group loved the hike. Some did both trails. We had lunch at the lake and dipped our feet in the cold water. A very memorable day indeed. Our souls are joyful and filled today. God bless and hope this is helpful.

Went on a tuesday late morning, the day after Memorial Day. Barely anyone there! It was steep for a lot of it. It was foggy but the views were still awesome. The lake was pretty and you could climb on these big rocks around the lake. It was a great hike-not too difficult or long! Some snow at the top. Otherwise was dry.

Good moderate hike. We went in Memorial days and it was very busy- cars parked on both sides of the road leading up to the trail head. One car parked on the cliff side was sliding off of the road into a tree/ravine so beware of parking on the cliff side.

Couldn’t make it up to Mason Lake, there was snow towards the very top of the Ira Spring trail and I couldn’t get to the top, but the views were still stunning! Some places along the trail are damaged by rock slides and tree falls but they’re easy to avoid

I would not recommend this trail right now as it's completely snowed in. We could only make it so far as the fork between Mason Lake and Mount Bandera, about 3 mile out. Post that there is waist deep snow with almost no footprints (no one else has ventured any farther). If you're looking for a steady workout with a gradual incline, it's a great hike still, but don't expect to reach the top.

Went early February, able to drive the entire forest road to the car park. Took snowshoes attached to our packs which were put on with maybe ~ 2 miles in. Had to tip-toe across a snowfield with very narrow tracks before reaching the ridge, then follow another narrow snowy (harder packed) trail down to Mason Lake.

An amazing spot that we did this morning. We took about 2 hours to get to the top where the plack is. We needed spikes for the top 1/4. The trailhead is at the very end of the gravel road. We could easily have done it in less time we were just chilling. We did not continue on to the lakes. The top part was a tiny bit sketchy because there is no visible trail really at all. Just the few people who had done it earlier in the morning. And the slope is quite steep and slippery. Just a heads up not at all a deterrent. Sunny most of the hike amazing views the whole time. Go hike year round. Poles could have helped a little at the top 1/4 of the hike. Plenty of parking a huge lot about 5 cars when we arrived at 11am Saturday morning.

Hiked this trail the week before Thanksgiving with a friend. Trails are in great shape and are very easy to follow. There seems to be a steady/continuous gain for majority of the hike. We hit ice on the decline down to the lake, which caused a few falls without the proper gear. All in all, a great hike that had minimal people.

I enjoyed the elevation and length although it can become difficult towards the end.
