Very nice trail it gets three stars because there was no information on the process to get down to McMicken state park. You start at Harstine State Park follow the trail down to the water follow the water South 1 mile. There’s a sandbar to cross over to the island you need to do this around 10 AM in the morning not late in the afternoon. By the time we got there the tide had already come in and we barely made it back without having to swim around all the trees that are down. You must come back by 3 PM or you’ll have to swim. Great hike, good workout, especially climbing through the trees trying to make it back.

This trail was pretty easy to walk. At times the grade did go pretty steep as you hiked down to the water. But our 4 yr old and 2 yr old were able to walk it. At times we kept them to our side but all in all a nice trail.

My only complaint with this trail is that it isn’t long enough! Coming from Tacoma, it was a beautiful drive. I visited on a Tuesday morning with two dogs. There was no one parked, on the trail, nor on the beach. I did come across a boat on the beach that looked as though it was abandoned, but I didn’t venture far enough to investigate. Discover Pass is requested, but availability to pay via slip. Restroom is clean. I found the trail to be well maintained and very easy, however, I did not complete the loop; returned the same way out as in. Can’t wait to return in the summer and spend some more time on the beach.

Nice trail to the beach, steep on the way up (and down, of course) but not nearly as bad on the way up as we’d anticipated. The sights from the beach are beautiful. Highly recommend!

Nice family trail, not long trail. Steps to beach though but if you take your time it’s fine. If nice weather I suggest bring sandals, specially for little ones, as there is creek they will want to walk in at the beach, just deep enough for their toes... my wife didn’t have them so she had to leap frog over water spots to walk the beach... even bring sack lunch if you have kids and it’s nice out, will wish you had so you can sit at the beach and let them play

A very pleasant, short loop. The spur trail leads to the beach, which on a sunny day is really very beautiful. The road that leads to the State Park, East Yates Rd, is an unpaved, rough surface road with pebbles and rocks, but it is easily driveable for any type of car. Discover Pass is required to park at the trailhead.

The app clocked this hike as 1.5k. It says easy but those of you just starting out, it's steep terrain down to water and if you take the loop back to the parking area, it's a gradual incline with brief spots of difficulty.

Pretty short hike. Gets steep when you are going to the water but quick and easy hike.

Very quiet and clean trails and beach access. My toddlers enjoyed the hike very much. Bring your own trash bag to dispose of waste. No bins in sight. Which is okay.

Besides the fact that it doesn't give you a clear idea of how far to the water when on the trail it was great. Is pretty steep in a few spots and some stairs are coming apart. But over all nice quite place to hike. Enjoyed it very much.

Harstine island state park is a fun short trail in the local area. Leads down to the shore along the puget sound!
