One of Seattle's most beloved parks. This hike loops around Green Lake. Geologists say the Vashon Glacial Ice Sheet, which also formed Puget Sound and other area lakes, formed Green Lake 50,000 years ago. Dredgings of Green Lake have produced volcanic ash from an eruption of Glacier Peak that occurred about 6,700 years ago. The lake was included in the Olmsted Brothers' comprehensive parks plan, and was given to the City by the State of Washington in 1905. Green Lake underwent a series of changes over the next 15 years- it was diked, dredged and filled until it shrunk by nearly 100 acres! The last fill deposited in Green Lake was from the excavation of Aurora Avenue. In more recent times, Green Lake has suffered from stagnation and pollution problems, as well as algae blooms. Milfoil and swimmers itch (caused by parasites from waterfowl) are still a consideration for those who swim in the lake.

2018/09/08 Saturday (Hiking Date). Good 3 Mile Walk around the lake. Paved road throughout the trail and beautiful lake. Kids play area and rest rooms at multiple points. Best place to spend time walking together as family.

The great intersection of this city. Yes it’s crowded but it’s still beautiful and a great place to walk/run/bike/skate/swim and get some exercise. Makes for good people watching and there’s always something going on. If you want to go someplace to connect with the energy of the city, this is the place!

Easy, great people watching and beautiful for sunsets, meeting friends and an easy place to get a little space in the big city

I have walked around GL for over 30 years (doing it this morning at 76). While the natural scene is great - birds of many feathers, raccoons, trees, it’s the people watching that provides the most most variety! You can get a “peak” of Mount Rainier, see it freeze, or walk around at night with Luminarias to guide you.

I run here almost everyday. It’s an easy 2.8 mile loop with nice, changeable scenery. The people-watching is pretty great, and there’s plenty of wildlife for such an urban setting - I’ve seen bald eagles and other birds of prey, in addition to the ducks and geese (now with their little broods since it’s Spring!). If you’re in Seattle and need a nice running route, this is it.

The lake is very serene and the multitude of bird species are quite used to all the human foot traffic. It is paved and a great place for a walk, bike ride, stroller or jog.

It is a nice clean trail. You can either walk on pavement or on gravel. It can get very crowded however and then you have to focus more on maneuvering around people than the scenery of the park.

Great but crowded place for a walk or a run.

Great scenery, rain or shine... for those who want to swim in the lake...On top the lake (boat, kayak, etc.) cool, in it, oh my no.

Beautiful run/walk but a little too busy for me and the water is great early summer for swimming but gets a little mucky by end of summer. Still a great park.

I've been coming to Greenlake for years. It's a nice easy 2.8mi or 3.1mi walk depending if you take the inner loop or the outer one. Can get busy especially on weekends with runners, bikers, roller bladers. Dogs OK on lease. There's plenty of eateries around the lake area. People swim in the lake but I've been around long enough to know how the water can be problematic at times. it's a great people watching place. There are several parking areas and in the summer would advise you to get there early.

Nice casual walk around a lake. Walk, ride a bike or takr in line skates. This is less a hike and more a celebration of being outside. The trail around the lake and the adjoining park are great for people watching especially in thr summer months. Walk the trail, and thrn grab a blanket and relax on the grass.
