Sunrise is located 60 miles northeast of the Nisqually Entrance and 14 miles northwest of the Sunrise/White River turnoff on Highway 410. Directions from White River Entrance: Drive westward along White River Road 14 miles to the Sunrise Complex parking area. Several Sunrise trails share the same trailhead at the north end of the Sunrise parking area. The Sourdough Ridge Nature Trail is among them. Please note: off-trail hiking is not allowed in the Sunrise area, due to fragile, tundra-like plant life.

The lake itself isn't much of a destination. It is a reservoir and not particularly scenic. You can't even go near the lake because it is fenced off. That said, the views of Mt. Rainier along the trail are gorgeous. We made a loop out of the hike by returning to Sunrise via Sunrise Camp and Shadow Lake. Shadow Lake was prettier than Frozen Lake.

Nice gradual incline on path with meadow flowers all around. Did Dege trail up top for great views of Rainer and the whole 360 degrees. Heard a coyote in the valley. Not difficult but a bit rocky up top so no flip flops!

It was a rainy and cloudy day but besides the weather conditions the hike was nice. I plan to hike the area again on a nicer day. There were some breaks in the fog to catch glimpses of stunning views. Because of the rain some of the trail was a little bit muddy but because the trails are so well kept was not much of a problem.

Great conditions, no bugs. We saw pika as well as marmots (the marmots were a little bit past the trail).

Wildflowers were beautiful! First part is a little steep, but then it evens out nicely. We took the Wonderland trail back and I would definitely recommend walking poles or hiking sticks for that part. It is a little steep going down and the dry dirt and rocks slide right out from under you. Got there at 10:15 on a weekday and the parking lot was half full. It was completely full when we left at 12:30. Saw marmots and goats. Bring binoculars if you have them!

What an amazing hike. It was very busy, but this has something for everyone. The lookout out at Fremont has great views and friendly chipmunks. The meadow flowers were also spectacular. We also ran into a brown bear and her cub, who didn’t mind people watching them. Overall a great experience.

We absolutely loved this trail. It’s a beautiful hike to see Mt Rainier and majestic sights. It is a bit difficult to find the sunrise area as it is not indicated very well. Once on the trail we were lucky to see a marmot along the path. Along the trail you are very close to wildlife and other small animals. The trail is suitable for all levels, and have great spots for photos with the breathtaking views of Mt Rainier. Strongly recommend this trail to everyone who is looking for an adventure up at Mt Rainer National Park.

Amazing views. We started at 4AM and summitted by 5:40 for sunrise. It was beautiful and very windy. Definitely some cliff parts if you’re scared of heights but not too sketchy. Will do again for sure.

Excellent easy hike uphill first mile with overlooks of the sides of a ridge and scenic views of the mountain and surrounding peaks. We saw lots of wildlife; mountain goats in the valley floor, marmot, deer, squirrels, Chipmunks, and Clark's Nuthatch's. Plenty of wildflowers including Penstemon, Cinquefoil, Smelowskia, Phlox, Lupine, Paintbrush, Fleabane, Aster, Speedwell, Arabis, Polygonum, Mountain Ash, and Heather. Trail ends at the main water source for the Sunrise Lodge area, a frozen lake/reservoir with intersecting trails to a lookout, the Wonderland Trail, overlooks, and a return trail to Sunrise. We found the lake interesting, but dwarfed by the views, the flowers, and wildlife. Overall, offers something for everyone.
