Getting There

Note: Lighthouse is currently CLOSED but grounds, restrooms, and picnic tables are still open. Dungeness National Wildlife Refuge provides a great place to check out waterfowl and seabirds on the coast. First things first: this is an epically long hike on sand. It doesn't appear to be so bad from the start, but the spit is deceptively long. That said, it's a great way to spend a nice day. The nice part is that you can turn back at any point, there are no monumental landmarks along the way that you'll miss if you don't make the end. That doesn't mean there is nothing to see, however. The beach is a combination of fine sand and large cobbles - with enough variation in color and composition to keep it interesting. There are plenty of cairns constructed, seemingly, just for the sake of building cairns. The Dungeness National Wildlife Refuge and Dungeness Bay provide a sheltered area for thousands of seabirds and waterfowl, be sure to bring your guidebook to identify them. And, as always, the flotsam of the Pacific Ocean is washed up onshore - including unique beach glass and fishing floats among the ubiquitous plastic shards.

Wobbly on the rocks since the waves were crashing on the nice sandy bits.

It was a wide flat and easy trail. Probably a little too short and simple for us, but good if you’re looking for a gentle stroll.

Easier walking on the beach when the tide is not at its highest. Check the tide before heading out. Very nice beach.

Very beautiful. We went during high tide and was just too scared to make it all the way to the lighthouse. Went about a mile out and came back. Still had a very nice time.

HikingGreat!

Loved this beach walk as I find it so peaceful listening to the waves and watching the various types of birds. Note: check the tides in advance. The return from the lighthouse was more challenging as a result of the incoming tide

Hiking

Although I did have the hike mostly to myself today, I felt the smoke/fog conditions made the hike likely feel longer than it was. The air did feel a little cleaner by the water than elsewhere I’d been today though. I completed the hike in 3.25 hours and spent most of my time listening to the water, chasing the birds and looking for cairns photo ops, since there wasn’t much to look at otherwise. I’d agree with others that the lighthouse was somewhat anticlimactic (it’s not open right now either) but it was a nice reward before the turnaround nonetheless. I’m not sure I would do this hike again even if conditions were different but I would say it’s a great workout. No regrets!

Nature tripsGreat!

A beautiful trail with ocean on one side & lake on the other. The lighthouse at the end of the trail is a reward. We made sure to note the high & low tide timings to reach back without hustle. Once while coming back from lighthouse we got high tide & had to walk on the other side of the trail.

Nice little forest hike at the beginning and end. Great, calming walk along the water. Lighthouse was a little underwhelming. Recommended.

Sept 6, 2020 Nice, relaxing way to spend a Holiday sunny day. Busy, but family friendly. As you go farther down the spit less traffic... Scenery is beautiful.

Walking through dense forests. A lot of stands of very tall trees. Also cut through a lot of spider webs!

A very unique early morning 12 mile walk. Make sure to have your hiking shoes for the rocky beach and many layers for the typical cold start of the day. Pay attention to the timing of the tide.

Lovely hike down to the beach. Most folks were wearing masks. Plenty of space on the beach to social distance. Most of this hike is on the beach. The view is spectacular.
