We made a backpacking trip of this - starting and ending at Deer Creek camp with night #2 down by Owyhigh Lake. Exactly 5 miles each way.

It deserves the "difficult" rating if you're carrying a 40 pound pack. The hike up contains almost zero decline, which made for a slow, winded trek. The hike down got to my calves for the same reason.

The hike can be summarized in three parts. It starts out with a slow, steady incline from Deer Creek for about 2 miles in mature cedar and hemlock. The second portion features similar scenery, with the addition of some creek crossings and glimpses of alpine meadows and berry patches, but consists mostly of switchbacks. The final section opens up with stretches of wildflowers and slow-growth conifers. The elevation levels out for the last 1.5 miles or so, allowing you to appreciate the increasingly stunning views which climax at Owyhigh.

I should point out that this trip fell on Labor Day weekend, and we crossed paths with only 4 other groups during the entire trek. Bonus!

P.S. Do not camp at Owyhigh. We set up there due to dry creeks at Tamanos. This resulted in a hefty fine from the rangers.
