The road is currently closed at the 5.5 mile mark which means you'd have to hike an extra 10 mikes of road each way to even reach the trail head...

Like many of the other WA trails north of Mt Baker, the views are excellent. Unobstructed 360° views of all the major peaks. I approached the peak from the Damfino Lake TH which was snow free to the lakes and then the snow kicked in - about 1 to 3 feet deep in places. Since I had never hiked this trail before and everything above the treeline was covered in snow I just hiked along the ridge line from the meadows to Excelsior Peak. Great all around winter hike and I'm sure the area is just as gorgeous in summer when the flowers are blooming or fall when the color changes. The road to the TH was snow free except for the last 1/2 mile - not a problem if you have AWD.
