Damfino Lakes to Welcome Pass is a 14.5 mile moderately trafficked out and back trail located near Glacier, Washington that features a lake and is rated as moderate. The trail is primarily used for hiking, walking, and camping and is best used from June until October.
Starting at the Damfino Lakes Trailhead near Glacier, WA, hike past the small lakes to Excelsior Pass and Peak. Continue along the High Divide Trail to Welcome Pass. By staging a car at the Welcome Pass Trailhead on Hwy 542, you could go down from Welcome Pass. Otherwise it is an out and back. Awesome views of the North Cascades, including Mt Baker and Mt Shuksan.
This is the third time I have hiked in the Excelsior Pass area, but the first time we made it all the way to Welcome Pass. We started at the Damfino Lakes Trailhead, enjoyed spectacular views from the top of Excelsior Peak and then continued along the High Divide Trail to Welcome Pass. This method avoids the extremely steep climbs from the Excelsior and Welcome Pass trailheads along Hwy 542 (Mt. Baker Highway). There were a lot of people on the Damfino to Excelsior section, but very few along the High Divide Trail to Welcome Pass. It was a little hazy the day we went. A combination of smoke from the Chelan fire and the pending rain. The last two times I was up there, the views were much more amazing since it was crystal clear. Mt Baker and Mt Shuksan dominate the views.
