This leisurely out-and-back hike is popular with locals and starts at the East Trailhead of Cowiche Canyon and follows the former railroad west for 1.1 miles, crossing 2 bridges and bypassing another. Turn right (north) at the trail sign which displays the Vineyard/Tasting Room hours. Climb 500' in 0.4 miles up through sagebrush and basalt formations to a scenic vista of the Naches Heights and Wilridge Vineyards and far out into the Yakima Valley. Enter the Vineyard and follow the doubletrack road (usually covered with spent grapes) towards the old farm house. You can indulge your taste buds in the tasting room, explore the vineyard on foot or return the same path back to the trailhead.

We took our two kids ages 4 and 7 on this hike. Once we reached the winery there was a live band playing. Perfect for an afternoon lunch. Afterwards we hiked back down. Coming down is a little steep but with help the kids did great. There is very little shade along the trail. Be sure to go early if it is a hot day.

This was a great hike. Did it with my 8 year old daughter. She made it with no issues other than she needed shoes with more traction. She used two trekking poles to get down which worked good for her. The winery was a fun little stop.

This was a fun trail to do with our children (3 and 6). It took 1.5 hours start to finish. The view of the Yakima Valley at the summit is gorgeous. Plan on carrying small little ones part the way up. The first 1/3 of the hike up the ‘hill’ is the toughest. Great way to spend a few hours on Saturday.

Excellent outing with the kids. Saw a couple beaver dams on Cowiche Creek, and explored the basalt formations on the way to to the top.
