Cougar Mountain Loop is a 23.1 mile moderately trafficked loop trail located near Bellevue, Washington that features a great forest setting and is rated as difficult. The trail is primarily used for hiking, walking, running, and nature trips and is best used from May until October. Dogs are also able to use this trail but must be kept on leash.
This route is actually a combination of several trails within Cougar Mountain Regional Wildland Park.
Other than the residential at the beginning and end of the trail. I loved that you went all over Cougar and Squak Mountains. All the peaks! AllTrails was off on distance and elevation. 26 miles, not 21. The map was wrong too. You have to figure out a route, because in 3 places they had the trail where no trail was. It was pretty easy to find a way. They should use a recording instead of the crap they use.
This trail started out in a neighborhood before eventually getting into cougar mountain. If I lived in the neighborhood it would be a good running trail, but I don’t. As far as hiking goes walking past the backside of homes in the neighborhood is a suboptimal experience to actually hiking cougar mountain. With cougar mountain trails so close to this trail I would not hike this trail again.
I'd give this a 3.5 rating if I could... Ran it easily at a 11-min pace. I started at Red Town Trail parking lot, and ran about 6.5 miles East to Renton Issaquah Rd SE (Rte 900) on this loop. I couldn't figure out how to get to the Squak trails without cutting through private property, so turned around and made it a 13-mile out-and-back. There are a ton of turns on this route that I definitely would have gotten lost on were I not able to download the route in advance. Might try it again with a running buddy who can navigate better than I.

Hi Robert, thank you for the review! We have updated the map so that it starts at the Red Town Trailhead, rather than the residential area. We've also ensured that it stays along designated trails. If you still see something wrong, please e-mail us at support@alltrails.com!
