Breathtaking views! The last leg of the road (about 13 miles or so) is a bit bumpy. Also the trail is surrounded by mountains and as a result it starts losing daylight by around 5:30 pm as the sun is blocked by the mountains. So, ensure to leave early!

9/15/2020 I was worried about the smoke as the visibility in the north cascade national park was poor in early morning & late evening (I could only make faint outline of mountains from below). However, I decided to go out early and make the most of sunlight for this hike and didn’t regret ! The weather is cool in the shade, warm and sunny above the tree line. (see pics)

Worth going to Doubtful Lake! It is another mile down and mile up but it made the hike for me. Nobody else down there. I understand what people are saying about the switchbacks but if they were any steeper the quality and integrity of the trail would not be able to withhold. IMO the trail is built perfectly. Hiked morning of 9/5 (Labor Day weekend). Thought I was late by starting at 730 but got a parking spot. Coming back down I understand what people were talking about with the crowds- literally double parked a mile down the road of course with people parking like jacklegs. Most important advice: park and start early

Great trail. Got there at noon and there was parking a bit further down from the parking lot but it was manageable. Switchbacks were manageable. Saw one very persistent chipmunk at the viewpoint but no wild life. Easy to social distance

Wonderful hike, pleasant from start to finish. The switchbacks were manageable and they definitely paid off. Incredible views. We got there at 10am and parking was sparse. We didn’t see much wildlife, but we still had a great time. Highly recommend!

We got to the trail head at 7:45 today and the parking lot was filling up quickly. Did not see any bears or goats but we only did the Cascade Pass Trail. We heard the yesterday’s bear was on the arm portion of the trail that continues on. Great scenery and saw a few marmots. Be prepared to drive quite a distance a narrow unpaved roads.Lots of considerate people on the trail wearing masks and trying to provide space on the trail when they could give it to you.

Nature tripsGreat!

- poles not necessary if in relatively decent shape. - recommend starting early in the AM as parking fills up. - long long long gravel road to the trailhead. - wildlife present (marmots, bears, etc.) We went in early September. Didn’t have any bugs and it was perfect weather. Just brought a single pack with lunch, lots of water, and sunscreen and that was all we needed. We hike relatively fast so it only took us about 5 hours total with stop for lunch (including the hike past the lookout point up around the mountain to get a view of the lake). Pretty good start for new people trying to get into hiking and find some good, isolated views of nature. However, don’t underestimate the leg workout if you aren’t in relatively good shape.

The section up to Cascade Pass was more of a moderate hike. I went up to the viewpoint over the lake, which was more difficult. There was a lot of traffic on the trail for the holiday weekend but probably 70% of people wore masks and everyone was respectful. Note that once you leave Rt 20, about 3/4 of the distance to the trailhead is unpaved. I drive a Mini Cooper and my little car made it up, but be prepared for the bumpy ride!

Loved it! If you want the scenic lake photo in the description it’s an extra hour hike. Tons of marmots, goats, and even momma bear was out

Hiking

The hike itself was very cool (Hiked on 9/5). Saw some wildlife and some awesome views. We went pass the Pass and went up to a viewpoint of Doubtful Lake and Sahale Glacier. However, I'd say only like, 30%, at most, of people were even properly wearing masks. It might have been a combination of people wanting to get out of the house and Labor Day weekend, but parking was a mess. We got there early and got a spot (8am), but by then time we finished and were leaving (1:30pm-ish), cars were parked all along the narrow road leading/ toleaving the trailhead. It got so bad that at one point, we were in a 20 minute stalemate with cars coming up, and neither direction could move because of all the parks parked along the road. Luckily a Park Ranger was in that line and eventually maneuvered everyone out, but that required some cars backing up or down the mountain until there was some clearing, so be weary. Just be mindful that the road to get there is pretty bumpy but do-able, and if the only spot to park is half of the road that leads up to the trailhead, maybe it's best to just turn around and find something else.

Beautiful! We saw a family of four mountain goats and a sweet black bear! The views this hike offers are amazing! The hike itself is more on moderate to easy not sure why it has been tagged hard. Note: Please for the love of outdoors, do not talk when you are passing other hikers, wait and turn your back when others are passing you. We are all in this together. Let’s keep the outdoors safe!

one of the most beautiful hikes I have done. Trailhead parking lot was almost full by 9am on the last week of August. I saw a HUGE black bear just a quarter mile past the Cascade Pass.

Hiked to the Lookout in clouds. Arrived in 2.5 hours still in fog. We decided to wait and after a few hours were rewarded with decent clearing on the south side mountains. Mount Baker remained shrouded with only a few peeks of the top here and there. Still an excellent hike.

We counted 36 switchbacks, but it was worth every turn. Gradual elevation gain made this hike extremely enjoyable. The views are second to none. I was in awe more than once. The rock field was tough on the feet and ankle, BUT the view coming down from there on a clear day priceless.

An amazing hike with beautiful views of the Cascades. Couldn’t believe how much beauty was in this hike! Hit the trailhead at about 9:30am and a full parking lot but wasn’t terribly overcrowded on the trail. Steady elevation gain and in and out of the shade/sun. Would definitely do again!
